¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Empezó como un juego de letras, básicamente es una palabra inventada que surge de mi nombre “real”. En mi primer grupo de graffiti mis amigos me llamaban “Davico”, así que decidí abreviar la palabra y crear mis primeros tags como “Biko” y “Beeko”. Al final pensé que quería un nombre de una sílaba, que sonara con mas fuerza y simplemente elegí “BEEK” , me gustaba la simetría en esa palabra, el movimiento y la repetición de la “E”, no parecía una palabra en español y eso me parecía original. Además me sentía cómodo conectando estas letras para firmar y tratar de resolverlas y entenderlas cuando las dibujaba, siempre fue un reto jugar con ellas.
It started as a game of letters, basically it is a made up word that comes from my «real» name. Finally I wanted a one-syllable name, to sound louder and just chose “BEEK”. I liked the symmetry in that word, the movement and repetition of the “E”, it didn’t seem like a word in Spanish and that seemed original to me. Also, I felt comfortable connecting these letters when i was taggin’ and trying to solve and understand them while drawing’em, it was always a challenge to play with those letters.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Me gustaba dibujar desde muy pequeño y escribir mi nombre en todas partes, siempre sentí cierta atracción por las letras y las formas, me gustaba coleccionar los comics de superhéroes de marvel y DC y me gustaban sus letreros y las tipografías. Mas adelante conocí a “YEMEKO” en la secundaria en el año 98 y el me enseño sobre la cultura del Hip Hop, ahí empecé a salir a la calle y hacer mis primeros tags con marcadores, después empecé a utilizar el aerosol y pintar sobre las paredes.
I liked to draw from a very young age and write my name everywhere, I always felt a certain attraction for letterforms, I liked to collect superhero comics from Marvel and DC and I liked their signs and fonts. Later I met «YEMEKO» in high school in 98 and he taught me about the culture of Hip Hop, there I started to go out and make my first tags with markers, then I began to use the aerosol and paint on the walls.

What is your style?
Es un estilo de letras que esta influenciado por el estilo salvaje clásico de Nueva York y Europeo, fueron mis primeras influencias y los primeros graffitis que ví cuando salí de Colombia, lo pude ver con mis propios ojos y después en revistas de Hip Hop cuando no existía el internet. Mi estilo de letras tiene mucho movimiento pero me gusta que tenga una estructura clara y legible, es un estilo dinámico y colorido, me gusta que genere un buen ritmo, que no sea aburrido de ver. Creo que me obsesiona un poco la limpieza y la calidad de la línea en mis trabajos.
My letter style was influenced by the classic wild style of New York and Europe, they were my first influences and the first graffiti that I saw when I visited these places, I could see it with my own eyes and later in Hip Hop magazines when the internet didn’t existed. My letter style has a lot of movement but I like that it has a clear and legible structure, it is a dynamic and colorful style, I like that it generates a good rhythm, that it is not boring to watch. I think I am a bit obsessed with the quality of the lines in my work.

El internet hoy en día es parte vital de nuestras vidas, por medio de portales como este siento que puedo dar a conocer más mi trabajo de graffiti y que lo puedan ver otros escritores al rededor del mundo. Las nuevas posibilidades y oportunidades de la era digital y la comunicación globalizada.
The internet today is a vital part of our lives, through portals like this I feel that I can make my graffiti work more known and let other writers around the world to see it. The new possibilities and opportunities of the digital age and globalized communication.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza fue de ROS CREW, no tenía ni idea de cómo usar bien la pintura en aerosol, todo fue muy experimental pero fue en un gran lugar, fue una pieza ilegal por la Autopista Norte en Bogotá en el año 1998. Mis letras han cambiado demasiado, empezaron siendo muy rígidas y poco definidas. En ese entonces me interesaba mucho las piezas rápidas y el graffiti ilegal pero de buena calidad en cuanto a las letras y los colores.
My first piece was an ROS crew piece, I had no idea how to proper use an spraycan, everything was very experimental but it was in a great spot, it was an illegal piece on a highway side wall in Bogotá in 1998. My letter style have changed a lot , it began very rigid and poorly defined. At that time I was very interested in quick pieces and illegal graffiti showing quality in terms of letter style and colors.
