¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Como la mayoría, al principio tuve varios nombres diferentes. Pero rápidamente me decidí por Ben, y se me ha quedado grabado desde 1997. La primera pieza que hice fue un Ben. No sé muy bien de dónde viene el nombre, pero creo que en algún momento compré unos pantalones Ben Davis y probablemente pillé el nombre de su logotipo. Pero también hay algo que me dice que vi un graffiti en el libro de colorear de mi hermana pequeña, y quizá venga de ahí. Así que no es una historia interesante, pero siempre me ha llamado la atención.
El 26 llegó hace unos 5 años, cuando mi amigo Sancho me dijo que a mis piezas les faltaba algo y que probara a añadir un número o algo así. Tenía razón, así que añadí el número de mi calle y desde entonces es Ben26.
Like most others, I’ve had several different names in the very beginning. But I quickly settled on Ben, and it has just stuck with me since 1997. The first piece I made was actually a Ben. I’m a bit unsure of where the name comes from, but I think I got a pair of Ben Davis pants at some point, and I probably just took the name from their logo. But there’s also something that tells me I saw a graffiti piece in my little sister’s coloring book, and maybe it comes from there. So no cool story, but it has just always stuck with me.
The 26 came about 5 years ago when my friend Sancho told me that my pieces were missing something and that I should try adding a number or something. He was right, so I added my street number and it’s just been Ben26 ever since.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Mi antiguo compañero de clase Rekyl había conseguido unos rotuladores Posca de sus padres, así que sugirió que fuéramos a pintar algunos graffitis en los trenes de cercanías. Esa fue la primera vez que el graffiti entró en mi radar. Después, varios alumnos de mi instituto empezaron a pintar y enseguida se hicieron muy hábiles. Sobre todo Caek y Ewis empezaron muy bien y fueron una gran inspiración. También empecé a salir mucho con mi primo Rane, que vivía más cerca de Copenhague. Durante un par de años, también conocí a más escritores y skaters de la ciudad vecina, y pasamos muchos buenos años juntos haciendo graffiti, patinando y celebrando fiestas. Además, nuestra ciudad tenía un gran muro de graffiti legal al que acudían a menudo muchos escritores expertos de Copenhague y alrededores. My old classmate Rekyl had gotten some Posca markers from his parents, so he suggested we go down and paint some graffiti on the local trains. That was the first-time graffiti came onto my radar. Afterwards, several people from my school started painting, and they quickly became quite skilled. Especially Caek and Ewis got off to a great start and were a big inspiration. I also started hanging out a lot with my cousin Rane, who lived closer to Copenhagen, and we skated and started tagging the trains together. Over a couple of years, I also got to know more writers and skaters from the neighboring town, and we had many good years with graffiti, skating, and parties together. Besides that, our town had a large legal graffiti wall that was often visited by many skilled writers from Copenhagen and the surrounding areas. That wall has been an important focal point and is probably the reason why we managed to create a mini graffiti scene in a very small area I grew up in.

What is your style?
¿Cuál es mi estilo? Creo que mi estilo es un graffiti danés muy tradicional, con letras funky, muchos colores y sencillos personajes de dibujos animados. En lo que respecta al graffiti, probablemente he estado en una especie de burbuja del graffiti danés. Pasaron muchos años antes de que me diera cuenta de la cantidad de graffitis geniales que se hacían en todo el mundo. What is my style? I think my style is a very traditional Danish graffiti style with funky letters, lots of colors, and simple cartoon characters. When it comes to graffiti, I’ve probably been in a kind of Danish graffiti bubble. It took many years before I realized how much cool graffiti is being made around the world. For many years, I only followed the Danish graffiti scene, and I think that is very much reflected in my style. I’m fully aware that those who have inspired me have drawn a lot of inspiration from abroad, especially from New York. For me, the flow of the letters is clearly the most important—everything else is just flair.

Do you remember the first piece?
Sí, recuerdo perfectamente mi primera obra de verdad, y la verdad es que salió bien. Debió de ser en 1997. Era una pieza «Ben» azul claro y verde con un contorno azul oscuro. Mi amigo Caek me ayudó un poco, así que pensé que lo tenía bastante controlado.
Pero resultó que no. Las siguientes piezas no fueron tan buenas.
Yes, I can definitely remember my first real piece, and it actually turned out okay. It must have been in 1997. It was a light blue and green ‘Ben’ piece with a dark blue outline. I got some help from my friend Caek, so I actually thought I had a pretty good handle on it.
However, it turned out that I didn’t. The next many pieces were not nearly as good.
