¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Mi nombre es un juego con la naturaleza documental del graffiti. Fotografiar grafitis es una parte importante de la cultura. Es un juego con la naturaleza «hoy aquí, mañana allá» de esta forma de arte. Codak es un juego de palabras con la película Kodak, pero preferí la «C» al principio en lugar de la «K».
My name is a play on the documentary nature of graffiti. Photographing graffiti is an important part of the culture. Playing in to the “here today gone tomorrow” nature of the art form. So Codak was a play on Kodak the film but I Preferred the “C” at the beginning instead of the “K” I felt it was better for the hand style and it just stuck.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Crecí patinando con mis amigos a finales de los 80 en Portland, Oregón, y un día un amigo de la escuela sacó un rotulador de cuatro dedos y escribió su nombre en una ventana de mi escuela y pensé: «¡¡¡Qué acaba de pasar! Lo siguiente que supe fue que estaba robando copias de Spraycan Art y Subway Art de la biblioteca local tratando de averiguar todo lo que pudiera sobre el graffiti.
I grew up skateboarding with my friends in late 80’s Portland, OR and one day a friend at school whipped out this 4 finger marker and wrote his name on a window in my school and I thought “What just happened”!! Next thing I knew I was stealing copies of Spraycan Art & Subway Art from the local library trying to find out everything I could about graffiti.

What is your style?
Mi trabajo es una combinación de muchos medios, influencias, etc. Ya no me fijo tanto en el graffiti. Me interesa la deconstrucción de la forma artística en forma, color y composición y la narrativa natural que surge de esta dinámica. Hace unos 20 años que no trabajo a partir de letras o bocetos, y es en el proceso de abstracción donde más me divierto.
My work is a combination of many mediums, influences, etc. I don’t necessarily look at to much graffiti anymore. I am interested in the deconstruction of the art form to shape, color and composition and the natural narrative that comes from this dynamic. I have not worked from letters or a sketch for about 20yrs and being lost in the process of abstraction is where I thrive the most.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
La verdad es que no me acuerdo. Creo que fue en el patio trasero de un amigo en North Portland alrededor del 89. Puedo decir que mis primeras piezas que sentí que estaba empezando a conseguir una mejor comprensión fue en torno a 1992, cuando se había trasladado a Kansas City, MO y fue expuesto a la crew ATT y Oriente, Quisp, Scribe y algunos otros. Ellos realmente me inspiraron a centrarse en mejorar en las letras. Antes de eso yo era realmente un bombardero. Actualmente estoy haciendo una residencia artística en Florencia, IT y tengo otra en Guadalajara, MX que viene este verano. Trabajo con varios medios: graffiti, pintura contemporánea, escultura y también soy tatuador. Todas estas formas de arte trabajan en un círculo para informarse mutuamente y hacer crecer mi léxico visual como artista y espero seguir empujando hacia adelante y evolucionando a medida que pasan los años.
I really don’t remember. I think it was in a friends backyard in North Portland around ’89. I can say my first pieces that I felt like I was starting to get a better understating was in around 1992 when I had moved to Kansas City, MO and was exposed to the ATT crew and East, Quisp, Scribe and a few others. They really inspired me to focus on getting better at piecing. Before that I was really a bomber. Today I am currently doing an artist residency in Florence, IT and have another in Guadalajara, MX coming up this summer. I work in several mediums from graffiti, contemporary paintings, sculpture and am a tattooer as well. All of these art forms work in a circle to inform each other and grow my visual lexicon as an artist and I hope to continue pushing forward and evolving as the years continue to go by.

No pares en tu empeño. Sé creativo, el camino casi nunca está despejado y la meta siempre cambia, pero mantente fiel a ti mismo. Sé abierto y devuelve energía a quienes te la dan. Tampoco estaría aquí sin la inspiración constante de mucha gente a la que he llegado a llamar amigos y colegas, y de todos mis compañeros de Thoughts Manifested, Abstracting the typography y Time is too Short… Os doy las gracias a todos.
Just keep at it. Stay creative the road is almost never clear and the goalpost is always changing but just stay true to yourself. Be open and give energy back to those that give good energy you. I also wouldn’t be here without the constant inspiration of too many people I have come to call friends and colleagues and all my crewmates from Thoughts Manifested, Abstracting the typography and Time is too Short…I thank you all.
