Where does your pseudonym come from?
Alrededor de 1999 me vi obligado a crear una nueva firma tras algunos problemas legales. Quería crear una firma que destacara y fuera original. Primero se me ocurrió DV8 y luego cambié el 8 por ATE cuando quise más letras.
Around 1999 I was forced to come up with a new tag after some legal issues. I wanted to come up with a tag that would stand out and be original. I first came up with DV8 then just changed the 8 to ATE when I wanted more letters.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Crecí al lado de la vía del tren, así que siempre estuve rodeado de graffiti. También tuve la suerte de que en mi zona había muchos escritores de calidad a los que admiraba. Uno de mis amigos tenía un ejemplar de una vieja revista australiana de graffiti llamada Hype, que solíamos estudiar y copiar. Una noche decidimos salir a pintar.
I grew up next to the train line so was always surrounded by graffiti. I was also lucky that my area had allot of high quality writers that I looked up too. One of my friends had a copy of an old Australian graffiti mag called Hype, we used to study it and copy the pieces. One night we decided to go out and paint.

What is your style?
Estilo semi salvaje con una fuerte influencia de Melbourne, Nueva York y Alemania. Principalmente combinaciones de colores clásicas que sé que funcionarán y experimentos monocromáticos, pero estoy intentando animarme a probar combinaciones de colores más extrañas. Para mí, el «estilo» o, lo que es más importante, el «estilo de letra» es lo más importante en el graffiti. Todo lo demás no son más que adornos en el árbol.
Algunas de mis piezas favoritas son de dos o tres colores y se hacen en menos de una hora. Simplemente estilo bruto. Es una opinión a la que he llegado con los años. Ojalá alguien me hubiera sentado cuando era un toy y me hubiera dicho que empezara por lo sencillo. Aprende cómo funciona una letra de imprenta sencilla antes de intentar hacer un estilo salvaje de seis colores en la oscuridad. Una vez que entiendas cómo funciona una letra, podrás empezar a darle tu toque personal.
Semi wild style with a strong influence from Melbourne, New York and Germany. Mostly classic colour schemes that I know will work and monochrome experiments, but I’m trying to push myself to try some weirder colour combinations. For me ‘style’ or more importantly ‘letter style’ is the most important thing in graff. Everything else is just decorations on the tree. Some of my favourite pieces are 2 or 3 colours and done in under an hour. Just raw style. This opinion is something I’ve come to over the years. I wish someone had sat me down when i was a toy and told me to start simple. Learn how a simple block letter works before you try to bust out a six colour wildstyle, trackside in the dark. Once you understand how a letter works you can start giving it your own personal funk.

El graffiti empezó para mí en Melbourne a mediados y finales de los 90, cuando tenía unos 15/16 años. Algunos amigos de la zona y yo estábamos muy enganchados al monopatín, cogíamos trenes y pasábamos el rato en sitios similares a los que la gente pintaba.
No conocíamos a ningún escritor, pero uno de mis amigos se hizo con un número de Hype (la icónica revista australiana Graff) y empezamos a copiar algunas cosas y, poco a poco, a hacer nuestros propios bocetos. En aquella época bebíamos mucho y dibujábamos cosas abstractas al azar, así que fue agradable centrarnos en algo. Empezamos haciendo firmas con rotuladores al azar, cambiando de nombre cada semana y adquiriendo confianza poco a poco. Uno de nosotros consiguió un trabajo en el supermercado local haciendo el relleno nocturno, estaba abierto las 24 horas y tenía en stock botes color Negro, plata y unos pocos colores de pintura en spray de mierda, lo disfrutamos durante casi un año antes de que dejaran de tenerlo en stock.
Nuestra primera pieza real fue una pieza de la crew junto a la pista cerca de mi casa en el 97, así que no puedo recordar mucho, pero debe haber ido bien ya que volví a la semana siguiente y se pintó el resto de la pared.
Hice mi primera obra en solitario en la parte posterior de mi club de fútbol que daba a la línea de tren en Ormond, relleno de plata con un contorno de punta de cincel rojo. Era un estilo horrible, pero sin duda me enganchó.
Casi 30 años después me gusta pensar que mi estilo es mucho mejor ahora.
Graffiti really started for me in Melbourne in the mid to late 90’s, around 15/16 years old. A few local friends and I were heavily into skateboarding, catching trains and hanging out in similar spots to where people painted.
We didn’t know any writers but one of my friends got hold of an issue of Hype (Iconic Australian Graff Magazine) and we started copying some stuff out of it and gradually coming up with our own sketches. At the time we were taking lots of acid and just drawing random abstract stuff so it was nice to focus on something. We started out just doing random marker tags, changing names every week and gradually developing some confidence. One of us got a job at the local Supermarket doing night fill, it was open 24hrs and stocked Black, Chrome and a few colours of shitty fan jet spray paint, we enjoyed that for almost a year before they stopped stocking it.
Our first real piece was a trackside crew piece just near my house in 97, we had all candy flipped (pill and tab) so I cant remember much but it must have gone well as went back the next week and painted the rest of the wall.
I did my first solo piece on the back of my football club that faced the trainline in Ormond, chrome fill with a red chisel tip outline. It was a horrible style but I was definitely hooked. Almost 30 years later I like to think that my style is much better now.

Haz lo que quieras, pero aprende la historia, muestra respeto, consigue tu propio estilo, viaja mucho, sé amable contigo mismo y bebe mucha agua.
Do your own thing but learn the history, show respect, get your own style, travel lots, be kind to yourself and drink lots of water.
