¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Siempre quise que mi seudónimo comenzara con la misma inicial de mi nombre y que fuera una palabra relacionada con la pintura. A finales de los 90’s, casi todos los escritores usaban palabras ya sea en inglés o español para sus seudónimos. Yo elegí Efect, en un principio, pero era un poco complicado que la gente lo pronunciara bien, así que decidí ponerlo como se pronuncia y en plural para que se identificara más fácil: («Efect» > «Efek» > «Efeks o Efekz»).
I always wanted my pseudonym to begin with the same initial as my name and to be a word related to painting. At the end of the 90’s, almost all writers used words either in English or Spanish for their pseudonyms. I chose Efect, at first, but it was a bit complicated for people to pronounce it well, so I decided to put it as it is pronounced and in plural to make it easier to identify: («Efect» > «Efek» > «Efeks or Efekz»).

What motivated you to get started painting?
Ver el episodio “To’e Me Up, To’e Me Down” de la serie Dangerous Minds. En él, uno de los protagonistas hacía un graffiti ilegal y al final mostraban el graffiti completo. Era una pieza que decía Spek. Cuando esa serie se transmitió en mi país, yo tenía 13 años y antes de eso, yo no había visto un graffiti como tal. Fue impresionante y enseguida me atrapó.
I liked watched the episode «To’e Me Up, To’e Me Down» from the series Dangerous Minds. In it, one of the protagonists did illegal graffiti and at the end they showed the complete graffiti. It was a piece that said Spek. When that series was broadcast in my country, I was 13 years old and before that, I had never seen graffiti as such. It was impressive and it immediately caught me.

Me encanta que ha habido cada vez más apertura para poder difundir el trabajo de los escritores de graffiti a nivel mundial y que gente de lugares lejanos pueda conocerte de alguna manera, aunque nunca hayas coincidido en persona. Eso contribuye a generar un sentido de pertenencia y de unidad, más allá de que todos tengamos ideales y maneras de pensar distintas y muchos nos encontremos a miles de kilómetros de distancia.
I love that there has been more and more openness to be able to spread the work of graffiti writers worldwide and that people from far away can meet you in some way, even if you have never met in person. This helps to generate a sense of belonging and unity, beyond the fact that we all have different ideals and ways of thinking and many of us are thousands of miles away.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primer pieza la hice una noche de enero de 1999 en una casa abandonada que estaba frente a la casa de un amigo. Eran unas letras sencillas, blancas, delineadas con rojo y efectos degradados en las puntas. A pesar de que ya había usado el aerosol para hacer tags, estaba muy nervioso por el temor de ser arrestado, sin contar que por el hecho de no saber donde conseguir boquillas especiales, usaba las de fábrica y tenía que cuidar mucho el trazo, así que también estaba nervioso de que quedaran horribles. Al final todo salió bien. Recuerdo mucho esa pieza, y definitivamente no hay punto de comparación con mi pieza más reciente. Tan sólo el hecho de contar con más y mejores herramientas y la ventaja que da la experiencia ha permitido que haga trabajos más grandes, más elaborados, llenos de color, jugar más con las letras, usar mejor el espacio y aprender de muchos errores que cometí antes e ir aprendiendo de los que cometo hoy en día.
I did my first piece one night in January 1999 in an abandoned house in front of a friend’s house. They were simple letters, white, outlined with red and degraded effects on the tips. Even though I had already used the spray to make tags, I was very nervous because of the fear of being arrested, not to mention the fact that I didn’t know where to get special caps, I used the factory ones and had to be very careful with the line, so I was also nervous that they would look horrible. In the end everything went well. I remember that piece a lot, and there’s definitely no comparison with my most recent piece. Just having more and better tools and the advantage that experience gives has allowed me to do bigger, more elaborate, colourful works, play more with letters, use space better and learn from many mistakes I made before and learn from those I make today.
