¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
En 1989, cuando empecé a escribir, me encantaba correr por ahí causando problemas por la noche. Hicimos un montón de carreras nocturnas en la calle (BMX) y cuando surgió la idea de pintar en las paredes, aprovechamos la oportunidad de correr a través de las carreteras y escribir en superficies limpias. Eso me llevó a investigar el graffiti y es historia y tomar muchas fotos en NY. Caminar por las líneas de tren en el Bronx para ver el graffiti fue una gran influencia para mí.
Back in 1989 when I started writing, I really loved running around causing trouble at night. We did a lot of night street riding (BMX) and when the idea of painting on walls came up, we jumped at the chance to run across highways and write on clean surfaces. That lead me to research graffiti and it’s history and take a lot of photos in NY. Walking train lines in the Bronx to see graffiti was a huge influence on me.

What do you try to say with your graffiti?
No digo nada en realidad, supongo… Sólo disfruto el acto de pintar a gran escala. Espero que mi trabajo inspire a otros a pintar.
Not really saying anything I guess… I just enjoy the act of painting large scale. Hopefully my work inspires others to paint.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Una de las cosas que esperaba que definiera una pieza de Emit además de mi estilo de letra, son algunos de los detalles. Al principio de mi carrera, me encantaban los grafitis en 3D, pero siempre estuve casado con la idea de la estructura de las letras de Nueva York y el contorno real de las letras. Siempre quise que mi pieza saliera de la pared y pareciera que se pudiera agarrar, como un estilo 3d bien pintado. Intenté obtener este aspecto haciendo una iluminación más realista en mi 3d, superponiendo y haciendo muescas en las partes de mi 3d que se sombreaban y/o superponían otras partes, así como añadiendo una sombra en la pared… Los diseños de relleno que se superponían a las letras y que iban dentro y alrededor de las letras también ayudaron a conseguir este aspecto. Los detalles siempre fueron secundarios para el estilo. Siempre quise que fueran algo que se notara al estudiar la pieza un poco. Algunas de estas ideas eran difíciles de conseguir en los 90 con la falta de selección de colores de hoy en día, así que algunas de mis piezas todavía eran bastante planas, pero siempre me ha encantado la idea de luz y sombra realistas para hacer que una pieza destaque.
One of things that I hoped would define an Emit piece besides my letter style, are some of the details. In the early days of my career, I had a love for 3d graffiti, but I was always married to the idea of NY letter structure and an actual outline around the letters. I always wanted my piece to pop of the wall and look as if you could grab it, like a well painted 3d style. I tried to obtain this look by doing a more realistic lighting on my 3d, overlapping and notching parts of my 3d that shadowed and/or overlapped other parts, as well as adding a shadow on the wall… Fill-in designs that overlapped letters and that went in and around letters also helped achieve this look. The details were always secondary to the style. I always wanted them to be something you noticed if you studied the piece for a bit. Some of these ideas were hard to achieve in the 90’s with the lack of the modern day color selection so some of my stuff was still pretty flat, but I have always loved the idea of realistic light and shadow to make a piece pop.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza? ¿Nos podrías contar la experiencia?
Do you remember the first piece?, Could you mind telling us the experience?
Hice varias piezas en mi primera semana de escritura. Todas eran de noche en el lado de la Interestatal. Recuerdo haberlas visto al día siguiente y haberlas odiado, así que hice otra. Utilicé boquillas stock y una mezcla de Krylon y pintura de hobby.
I did several pieces in my first week of writing. They were all at night on the side of the Interstate. I remember seeing them the next day and hating them, so I would do back and do another. I used stock caps and a mix of Krylon and hobby paint.
¿Dónde te gustaría pintar?
Where would you like to paint?
Los lugares favoritos para pintar son el cemento crudo, o los ladrillos de un edificio abandonado. Me gusta el entorno deteriorado alrededor de un grafiti limpio, nítido y de colores brillantes.
Además, viajar a otras ciudades para pintar ha sido un punto culminante de mi carrera. Siempre disfruto viendo otras escenas de graffiti y pintando puntos locales.
Favorite spots to paint are raw cement, or bricks in an abandoned building. I like decayed surroundings around a clean, crisp, bright color graffiti letters.
Also, traveling to other cites to paint has been a highlight of my career. Always enjoy seeing other graffiti scenes and painting local spots.

Empecé la crew del DF con el Sub en 1991. Empezó como un equipo que se dedicaba principalmente a las grandes producciones, pero rápidamente se convirtió en un grupo de escritores que lo pintaban todo.
I started DF crew with Sub in 1991. It was first started as a crew that would mainly do large production walls, but that quickly escalated into a bunch of writers that painted everything.
