¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Nací en una era del hip-hop donde todos querían verse y sonar diferentes, Black Moon, Digable Planets, Wu, Redman, etc. Cuando pensaba en nombres quería tener esa energía agresiva del hip-hop pero también quería un nombre que sería difícil de morder. Siempre me encantó Es y cuando comencé a jugar con la palabra Esteme, me dio lo que quería y tenía un fuerte sonido. Un día le mostré una pieza que había esbozado en mi libro a un escritor de renombre y me dijo que no podía tener un nombre con tres E. Eso me hizo aún más comprometido con el nombre. Eso fue en 1998. TGE es mi crew con el que comencé en Curve en 1999. Es como mi apellido. Ves a mi crew en todos mis estilos y cómo pienso sobre el graffiti.
I came up in an era of hip-hop where everybody wanted to look and sound different, Black Moon, Digable Planets, Wu, Redman etc. When I was thinking of names I wanted to be have that aggressive hip-hop energy but also wanted a name that would be hard to bite. I I always loved Es and when I started messing around with the Word Esteme, it gave me what I wanted and had a strong ring to it. One day a showed a piece that I had sketched in my book to a big name writer and he told me that I could not have a name with three Es. That made me even more committed to the name. That was in 1998. TGE is my crew that I started with Curve in 99. Its like my last name. You see my crew in all my styles and how I think about graffiti.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Cuando era niño, la revista Source era la biblia para los fanáticos del hip hop. El Source de 1994 con Queen Latifa en la portada tenía algunos trenes increíbles de Arab, también conocido como Doc TC5 y Mode 2. Las formas y colores o tal vez incluso la forma en que se veían en los trenes se quedaron conmigo. Lo estudié y finalmente me hizo “ver” y examinar todos los graffitis que me rodeaban en Filadelfia.
When I was growing up the Source Magazine was the bible for hip hop heads. The 1994 Source with Queen Latifa on the cover had a few amazing trains from Arab aka Doc TC5 and Mode 2. The shapes and colors or maybe even the way it looked on the trains stuck with me. I studied it and it ultimately made me “see” and examine all the graffiti around me in Philadelphia.

What is your style?
Dicen que mi estilo es como el jazz o la parte de una canción de salsa donde los vientos y la percusión se vuelven locos y los bailarines se separan y empiezan a bailar improvisadamente, yo diría que es todo eso. Definitivamente estudio estilos fundamentales y los avivo con todo lo que he aprendido a lo largo del camino de otros elementos del arte y la vida. Tengo muchos estilos tradicionales basados en barras, pero me concentro en Flow y en voltear cosas para que sea divertido de hacer y divertido de ver. Últimamente trabajo hacia un minimalismo complicado y funky. Me gusta el desafío de hacer que las letras tengan suficiente carácter para sostenerse por sí mismas. Mi estilo está fuertemente inspirado en mis amigos y tengo algunos amigos enfermos.
They say my style is like jazz or the part in a salsa song where the horns and percussion go crazy and dancers break apart from each other and start dancing improvisationally, I would say its all of that. I definitely study foundational styles, and stir them up with everything that I have learned along the way from other elements of art and life. I have a lot of traditional bar based styles, but focus on Flow and flipping things to make it fun to make and fun look at. Lately I work towards a complicated, funky minimalism. I like the challenge of making the letters have enough character to stand by themselves.
My style is heavily inspired by my Friends, and I have some ill Friends.

Eres fresco y documentas a muchos artistas increíbles que nunca antes había visto. Es un gran lugar para aprender cómo la gente aborda el graffiti en todo el mundo. Es un honor para mí compartir mi trabajo en un foro como este y un honor para mí representar a Filadelfia, un lugar que está bajo el radar de mucha gente para el empalme y en general, a pesar de ser el lugar de nacimiento del movimiento del graffiti moderno. You guy are fresh and document a lot of incredible artists that I have never seen before. It is a great place to learn about how people are approaching graffiti around the world. I’m honored to share my work in a forum like this and honored to represent Philadelphia, a place that is under a lot of people’s radar for piecing and in general, despite being the birthplace of the modern graffiti movement. I’m happy to almost be 30 years painting and still contributing to this culture I love.

Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza fue un ESTM detrás de mi escuela secundaria en una cancha de baloncesto abandonada. Era un desastre y los colores eran asquerosos pero las letras eran sólidas, ja. Sólo quería pintar algo que mis amigos y yo en la escuela respetáramos.
My first piece was an ESTM behind my high school in an abandoned basketball court. It was a drippy mess and the colors were disgusting but the letters were solid ha. I just wanted to Paint something that me and my Friends at school would respect.
