¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Empecé a pintar en 1993, jugando con un par de nombres y rápidamente me decidí por el nombre «GES». que no tiene ningún significado real más que una combinación de letras con las que pensé que podría vivir. Después de algunos años, quería pintar estilos mucho más grandes y estirados, así que comencé a agregar el «ER». para hacer un nombre de 5 letras. Nunca tuve la intención de cambiar mi nombre, solo terminé eligiendo 5 letras en lugar de 3 más a menudo. También he estado escribiendo un nombre secundario «ASUEM» (pronunciado «assume») desde 2009 para divertirme pintando letras que no sean las mías de vez en cuando.
I started painting in 1993, messing around with a couple of names and quickly settling on the name «GES». which has no real significance other than a combination of letters I though I could live with. After a few years, I wanted to paint much larger stretched-out styles, so I began adding the «ER». to make a 5-letter name. I never intended to change my name, I just ended up choosing 5 letters over 3 more often. I also have been writing a side name «ASUEM» (pronounced «assume») since 2009 in order to have fun painting letters other than my own from time to time.

What motivated you to get started painting?
A principios de los 90 estaba muy involucrado e inmerso en el skateboarding y en la escena musical punk rock/hardcore. Como resultado, la mayoría de los lugares en los que me encontré tenían graffiti y me intrigó al instante.
In the early 90’s I was very heavily involved and immersed in skateboarding and the punk rock/hardcore music scene. As a result, most of the locations I found myself at had graffiti and I was instantly intrigued by it.

What is your style?
Esta nunca es fácil de responder definitivamente, ya que siento que ha cambiado a lo largo de los años, sin dejar de construirse sobre los mismos cimientos. Por encima de todo, mi estilo se centra en el estilo, la estructura y el equilibrio de las letras sin necesidad de que muchos colores sean efectivos. De hecho, he simplificado mi estilo de letras a lo largo de los años, siempre esforzándome por crear piezas que sean visualmente fuertes incluso con solo 2 colores. Me gustan mucho las piezas plata y negras por esta razón, y a menudo me he referido a esta combinación de colores como el «detector de mentiras del estilo». lo que significa que no hay colores ni efectos especiales detrás de los cuales esconderse.
This one is never easy to definitively answer, as i feel it has changed over the years, while still being built upon the same foundation. Above all else, my style focuses on letter style, structure, and balance without the need for many colors to be effective. I have actually simplified my letter style over the years, always striving to create pieces that are visually strong even with just 2 colors. I really like chrome & black pieces for this reason, and I have often referred to this color combo as the «style lie-detector». meaning there are no colors and special effects to hide behind.

Siempre es genial tener la oportunidad de llegar a personas que quizás no hayan visto tu trabajo antes, o que no hayan visto nada de la historia detrás del artista.
It’s always great to have the opportunity to reach people who may not have seen your work before, or have, yet do not have any of the backstory behind the artist.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza fue solo una prueba rápida y espontánea después de emocionarme al ver graffiti la noche anterior (conduje hasta una fábrica abandonada cercana con solo 4 botes que encontré en el garaje de mi casa). Realmente no tenía ningún conocimiento de cómo se suponía que debían hacerse las cosas, nunca había visto a nadie pintar antes (todo esto era antes de Internet). Recuerdo claramente hacer mi primera línea y detenerme por un segundo mientras miraba el bote con asombro debido a la línea satisfactoria que salió de ella. Instantáneamente supe que estaba enganchado, ¡pero aún no sabía cuánto! En muchos sentidos, esa pieza fue una de las más divertidas, porque no había presión, ni reglas, ni conocimiento de cómo se suponía que debía hacerse… era pura diversión. Hasta el día de hoy, todavía disfruto pintando tanto, si no más.
My first piece was just a spontaneous quick try-out after getting pumped from seeing graffiti the night before ( I drove to a nearby abandoned factory with just 4 cans that I found in the garage at my house). I really had zero knowledge of how things were supposed to be done, having never seen anyone paint before (this was all pre-internet). I distinctly remember making my very first line, and stopping for a second as i looked at the can in amazement because of the satisfying line that came out of it. I instantly knew I was hooked, I just didn’t know how badly yet!
In many ways, that piece was one of the most fun, because there was no pressure, no rules, no knowledge of how it was ‘supposed’ to be done… it was just pure fun. To this day, I still enjoy painting just as much, if not more.

Mi crew principal es 3A. que comencé a fines de 1994. Tiene muchos significados diferentes, pero uno de los significados originales era «Aniquilar todas las áreas». También «Again And Again». «Always Above Average» «Ask Anyone Around» y muchos otros.
My main crew is 3A. which i started in late 1994. It has many different meanings, but one of the original meanings was «Annihilating All Areas’ .
