¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Cuando crecí, tuve un puñado de nombres y pasé unos cuantos años con cada uno de ellos. A medida que la pasión por la pintura crecía, llegué a un punto en el que realmente quería un nombre con el que resonara fuertemente, así que pasé probablemente un año pintando diferentes ideas de nombres que en su mayoría giraban en torno a mi interés por la música y más concretamente por la batería. Me encanta la batería y la música en general, pero quería un nombre que lo reflejara. Empecé a jugar con el nombre Gruve y me gustaron las letras y también el mensaje positivo que tenía en la calle, incluso para una persona sin interés en el graffiti.
Growing up I had a handful of names going a few years with each. As the passion for painting grew I reached a point where I really wanted a name that I resonated strongly with so I spent probably about a year painting different name ideas that mostly revolved around my interest in music and more specifically the drums. I love the drums, and music in general but wanted a name that would reflect that. Started playing with the name Gruve and grew to enjoy the letters and also liked the positive message it had on the street even to a person with no interest in graffiti.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Mientras crecía practicando el skate y el snowboard en Minnesota, siempre estaba en el fondo el graff y creo que inconscientemente creció en mí. No fue hasta que pude hacer un viaje a Londres después del instituto y fui directamente a Brick Lane y me enamoré de todos los murales y graffitis de las calles, viniendo de Estados Unidos nunca había visto nada parecido y me enamoré.
Growing up skateboarding and snowboarding in Minnesota it was always in the background and I think it subconsciously grew on me. It wasn’t until I was able to take a trip to London after High School and went straight to Brick Lane and fell in love with the all the murals and graffiti in the streets, coming from the United States I had never seen anything like it before and fell in love.

What is your style?
La verdad es que siento que todavía estoy desarrollando mi estilo, pero tiendo a mantener un espíritu lúdico y caprichoso en mis obras. Realmente espero hacer sonreír al espectador de mis cuadros, o incluso reírse de lo extraños que pueden ser a menudo.
I truthfully feel like I am still developing my style, but I tend to keep a playful and whimsical spirit to my pieces. I really hope to make a viewer of my paintings smile, or even laugh at how odd they can often be.

Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza, recuerdo haber traído un boceto que debí dibujar en clase y estar muy emocionado por cómo quedó. Lo genial es que todavía hoy apenas se monta, bastante despreciado, por supuesto, pero divertido de ver todos estos años después.
My very first piece, I remember bringing a sketch I must have drawn while in class and being pretty excited about how it came out. The cool thing is, its still barely riding today quite dissed of course but funny to see all these years later.
