¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Antes tenía otros nombres. A mediados de los noventa conocí a otro chico con el mismo nombre de tag que yo, así que ambos decidimos cambiar de nombre. Por aquel entonces estudiaba historia de la raza negra estadounidense y me topé con el nombre Malik. Sonaba diferente a los nombres de firma comunes en aquella época. Estaba seguro de que volvería a cambiármelo pronto, pero se me quedó grabado hasta hoy. Se convirtió en mi identidad.
I had other names before. On a graffiti happening in the mid nineties I met another guy with the same tag name as me, so we both decided to change names. At that time I studied American black history, where I stumbled across the name Malik. It sounded differently to the common tag names at that time. I was sure to change it soon again, but it got stuck till today. It became my identity.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Pintaba y dibujaba desde niño, era algo natural para mí. Era lo mío. En 1992 vi mi primer graffiti en mi ciudad natal. Fue una epifanía. Me impactaron el tamaño y los colores, y esto en un espacio público sin permiso.. Allí mismo supe que tenía que hacerlo. Sin conocer a nadie ni nada, empecé y nunca paré. No hay técnica más versátil, que permita más velocidad y posibilidades. Y luego está el olor de los botes de spray, ¡que sólo quieren hacerme ir a por más!
I was painting and drawing since I was a kid, it came naturally to me. It was just my thing to do. In 1992 I saw my first graffiti in my hometown. This was an epiphany! I was struck by the size and the colors and this in a public space without permission.. Right there I knew I had to do that. Without knowing anyone or anything, I started and never stopped. There’s no technique which is more versatile, allows more speed and possibilities. And then there is the smell of the spraycans, that just want to make me go for more!
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Dímelo tú. Nunca he encontrado una definición adecuada para mi estilo. Simplemente hago lo que me apetece y de ahí sale un determinado estilo. Sobre todo personajes o escenarios. No es fotorrealismo, no es cómic. No es real, ni surrealista, sólo un poco raro. Sólo quiero divertirme con lo que hago.
You tell me! I never found a proper definition for my style. I just do whatever I like to do and out comes a certain look. Mostly characters or sceneries. It is not photorealism, it is not comic. It’s not real, it’s not surreal, just a bit weird. I just wanna have fun with whatever I do!.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
¿Quién olvida la primera pieza? Yo tenía botes de mierda, bastante inútil .. Tenía un pequeño boceto y 5 colores. Y metí la pata hasta el fondo: no esbocé la pared y empecé por la primera letra, acabando por no tener espacio suficiente para la última letra, que colé al final. Sinceramente, fue bastante malo. Cometí todos los errores posibles. Pero tenía una sonrisa en la cara todo el tiempo haciéndolo, sabía que era lo correcto para mí, estaba en casa, había encontrado mi destino.
Durante todos estos años he probado varias cosas y estilos, diferentes superficies y objetos. Para mí siempre fue importante mantener la diversión y la motivación, probar cosas nuevas, desarrollarme. Siempre hago lo que me dicta el corazón. Sólo tengo que complacerme a mí mismo. Todo lo demás es secundario.
Who forgets his first one? I had crappy cans, quite useless.. I had a little sketch and 5 colors. And I messed up badly: I didn’t sketch the wall and I started with the first letter, ending up having not enough space for the last letter, that I squeezed in at the end. Honestly it was pretty bad. I made every mistake possible. But I had a smile on my face the whole time doing it, I knew it was the right thing for me, I was home, I found my destiny.
During all the years I tried several things and styles, different surfaces and objects. For me it was always important to keep the fun and motivation, try new things, develop myself. I always do what my heart tells me. I only have to please myself. Everything else is secondary.

No te preocupes demasiado por lo que piensen los demás, haz lo tuyo y disfruta. Cosas como la fama y el éxito llegarán si te mantienes fiel a ti mismo.
Don’t care too much bout what others think, just do your thing and enjoy it! Things like fame and success will come, if you stay true to yourself.
