¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Al principio, cuando empecé a firmar en 2006, me hacía llamar Ice y luego Poket. Me arrestaron muy pronto porque no sabía muy bien lo que hacía, así que tuve que inventarme una nueva firma. Me gustaba mucho la letra P al principio de una palabra, porque era un gran fan de tipos como Phibs, de Sydney (Australia), y Phat 1, de Nueva Zelanda. Mientras intentaba pensar en una nueva firma, mi madre me gritaba por algo y utilizó un apodo que tenía para mí. Le puse una P delante y desde entonces me llamé Portl. He tenido varias palabras diferentes para referirme a pintar las piezas, pero siempre he utilizado la firma original. He intentado escribirlo y deletrearlo de varias maneras a lo largo de los años, incluyendo Portal, Eltrop, Porty, Ports y finalmente me quedé con Pawtl para piecing, ya que me encanta la fluidez de la W en medio de la palabra.
Originally when I first started tagging around 2006 I was going by the name Ice and then Poket. I was arrested very quickly as I didn’t really know what I was doing, so I had to come up with a new tag. I really liked the letter P at the start of a word as I was a big fan of guys like Phibs from Sydney, Australia and Phat 1 from New Zealand. While I was trying to think of a new tag my mum was yelling at me for something and used a nickname she had for me. I stuck a P on the front of it and from then on I went by Portl. I’ve had a few different words for piecing, but I’ve always gone by the original tag. I have tried writing and spelling it in various ways over the years including Portal, Eltrop, Porty, Ports and finally I stuck with Pawtl for piecing as I love the flow of the W in the middle of the word.

What motivated you to get started
Mi hermano mayor fue mi mayor motivación. A él le encantaba patinar así que me metí en el patinaje, a él le gustaba mucho el arte, así que yo quería ser artista. Tuvo la suerte de recibir clases de dos de los mejores de Melbourne, Ethics y Sirum, y empecé a pintar con ellos. Un día llegó a casa con un VHS de Beat Street. Fue mi primera introducción al mundo del breaking y del graffiti neoyorquino. A la semana siguiente trajé a casa una copia de Style Wars y después de escuchar la potente introducción de Wagner mientras el primer tren entraba en escena, supe que estaba enganchado.
También había una revista de hip hop australiana gratuita que se publicaba por aquel entonces, Out For Fame, que tenía un póster desplegable llamado Skill Check en la parte trasera de la portada. Estos pósteres contenían algunas de las producciones australianas y neozelandesas más increíbles que jamás había visto y estuvieron en la pared de mi habitación durante todo el instituto. Sabía que quería dedicarme al piecing y a hacer quemados. Una vez que lo descubrí ya no paré.
My older brother was my biggest motivation. He used to love skating so I got into skating, he was big on art, so I wanted to be an artist. He was lucky enough to be schooled by two of Melbourne’s best, Ethics and Sirum and he started to paint with them and I would go and watch. One day he came home with a VHS of Beat Street. This was my first introduction to the world of breaking and NYC graffiti, I remember being blown away by it. The next week he brought home a copy of Style Wars and after listening to the heavy hitting Wagner intro as the first train pulled into frame I knew I was hooked.
There was also a free Australian hip hop magazine that was being published at the time called Out For Fame, that had a fold out poster called Skill Check on the back of the cover. These posters had some of the most amazing Australian and New Zealand productions I’d ever seen and they stayed on my bedroom wall all through high school. I knew I wanted to get into piecing and doing burners. Once I figured it out I never stopped.

What is your style?
Mi estilo en este momento se ha convertido en un estilo salvaje que es una mezcla entre una navaja suiza y un estegosaurio. Tiene muchas puntas afiladas y un movimiento que conecta y atraviesa cada letra. Me gusta pensar que mi estilo es una mezcla condensada del estilo salvaje de Nueva York y Melbourne junto con fuertes combinaciones de colores.
My style at the moment has become a wild style that is a mixture between a swiss army knife and a stegosaurus. It has a lot of sharp points and movement that connects and pierces through each letter. I like to think my style is a condensed mixture of the New york and Melbourne wild style along with strong clashing colour schemes.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Maldita sea, mi primera pieza fue en un desagüe de aguas pluviales en Balaclava, Australia en 2006 y fue una locura de toyaco. Mi amigo y yo nos hicimos con una mierda de pintura tóxica para coches llamada 5 estrellas y nos pusimos a ello. No teníamos ni idea de lo que estábamos haciendo y estoy bastante seguro de que nos pilló uno de los vecinos. Poco después me volvieron a pillar por segunda vez. Después de esto sabía que no iba a parar, pero empecé a tomarme el piecing más en serio y he estado trabajando en el estilo desde entonces.
Damn, my first piece was in a storm water drain in Balaclava, Australia in 2006 and it was mad toy. Me and my mate got our hands on some shitty toxic car paint called 5 star and had a go at it. We had no idea what we were doing and I’m pretty sure we got caught by one of the neighbours. Not long after this I got busted again for a second time. After this I knew I wasn’t going to stop but I started taking piecing more seriously and I’ve been working on style ever since.
