¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Tantos tienen nombres tan bonitos en el juego del graffiti. Yo elegí el nombre RAST, sólo porque me gusta la combinación de letras. Por aquel entonces tenía 15 o 16 años y ya había tenido muchos nombres, así que fue una especie de coincidencia que me quedara con ese.
So many have so nice names in the graffiti game. I chose the name RAST, only because I like the letter combination. I mean, I was 15 or 16 years old back then and I had a lot of names before so it was kind of coincidence that I stick to that one.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Desde que era pequeño, me gustaba mucho dibujar y pintar. Cuando tenía unos 10 años, me pasaba el día viendo cómics delante de la televisión o incluso en el colegio. Dibujaba a todos mis héroes de los programas de televisión como Saber Rider o las películas de Chuck Norris. Aprendí que podía expresar muy bien mis sentimientos haciendo arte y también compensarlos.
Cuando fui al instituto y tenía unos 13 o 14 años, entré en contacto con la música hip-hop e intentaba ser guay, pero era el chico raro de la última fila que dibujaba cómics. Así que sólo era cuestión de tiempo, hasta que aprendí lo que significa el verdadero hip-hop y que hay elementos y, por supuesto, el graffiti fue lo mío desde el principio. Podía expresarme, no ya en mis cómics, sino incluso al público sin preguntar, así que me contagié desde el primer día.
Since I was a young kid, I was very much into drawing and painting when I became about 10 years old I was rating comics strips all day long in front of television or even in school. I was drawing all my heroes from the TV shows like Saber Rider or Chuck Norris movies. I learned that I could express feelings very good by doing art and also compensate them.
When I went to high school and I was like 13 or 14 years old, I got in touch with hip-hop music and was trying to be cool, but I was the weird kid in the back row drawing comic strips. So it was only a question of time, until I learned what real hip-hop means and that there are elements and of course, graffiti was my thing from the beginning. I could express myself, not even in my comic books, but even to the public without asking so I was infected from day1.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Mi estilo es el clásico New York Phunk Style. Creo que la base de ese estilo está muy en las letras de Dondi. Este estilo fue llevado a Alemania en los años 80 por una crew pionera de Heidelberg llamada TPM y para mí era la única forma en la que el graffiti podía parecerse porque las formas dinámicas y las proporciones eran como una ciencia o arquitectura y no sólo aleatorias como pensaba antes. Tomar ese estilo, aprender a hacerlo y desarrollarlo es mi objetivo en el graffiti. Mucha gente intenta ser innovadora y crear algo completamente nuevo. Ese nunca ha sido mi objetivo. Por eso algunos me llaman anticuado, pero yo no pinto por relevancia. Pinto por estilo.
My style is the classic New York Phunk Style. I think the base of that style is very much in the letters of Dondi. This style was brought to Germany in the 80s by a pioneer crew from Heidelberg called TPM and for me that was the only way graffiti could look like for me because the dynamic shapes and the proportions were like a science or architecture and not only random as I thought before. So taking that style, learning how to do it and develop it further is my goal in graffiti. a lot of people out there try to be innovative and create something completely new. That was never my focus. That’s why I am called old-fashioned by some people, but I don’t paint for relevance. I paint for style.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Sí, acabo de cumplir 15 años y les dijimos a nuestros padres que nos quedábamos a dormir en casa de unos amigos y por la noche trepábamos por el balcón para bajar al jardín y nos íbamos a un pequeño parque infantil que había cerca y le dábamos caña al muro de hormigón con una pieza de juguete de seis colores… Nunca conseguimos una buena foto aunque estuvo ahí durante 10 años.
Yes I do, I just turned 15 and we told our parents we stay over at the friends house and at night we were climbing over the balcony down to the garden and went off to a little playground nearby and we rocked the concrete wall with six color toy piece… Never got a good picture although it was there for 10 years.

No quiero parecer patético, pero siempre he sido una especie de maestro para las generaciones más jóvenes y creo que esto es muy importante. Los más jóvenes necesitan orientación y, aunque encuentren sus nuevos caminos, tienen que apreciar la historia y a los pioneros del graffiti, la mayoría de los más jóvenes, nunca vieron Wild Style o Style Wars. Así que lo que es obvio para los mayores no tiene por qué tener sentido para los más jóvenes, pero tenemos que llevarnos bien. La unidad es importante.
I don’t want to sound pathetic, but I always was a kind of teacher to the younger generations and I think this is very important. The younger ones need guidance and although they find their new ways, they have to appreciate history and the pioneers of graffiti most of the younger ones, never saw Wild Style or Style Wars. So what is obvious to the older ones does not necessarily make sense to the younger ones, but we have to get along. Unity is important.
