¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Mi apodo proviene de un apodo con el que mis amigos siempre me han llamado, Rek. Rekiem es una extensión del nombre que me da más juego para pintar, al contener más letras. Sé que puede dar a confusión con la palabra “réquiem”; canto que se dedica a los difuntos. En el mundo del arte toda obra se suele revalorizar cuando el artista muere, que se podría entender como un réquiem a su obra. Pero mi nombre no se refiere a eso. El significado que yo le doy a mi nombre se refiere a todo lo contrario. Trato de reivindicar que valoremos las cosas en su debido momento, el presente; arte, momentos, lugares…
My nickname comes from a nickname my friends have always called me, Rek. Rekiem is an extension of the name that gives me more play to paint, as it contains more letters. I know it can be confusing with the word “requiem”; song that is dedicated to the deceased. In the world of art, every work is usually revalued when the artist dies, which could be understood as a requiem for his work. But my name doesn’t refer to that. The meaning that I give to my name refers to the complete opposite. I try to claim that we value things in due time, the present; art, moments, places…
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Recuerdo que un par de colegas me animaron en el instituto a que fuera a pintar con ellos. Pero sobre todo lo que me ha motivado y me ha mantenido es la posibilidad de llegar a tantas personas. De escribir y pintar tu nombre en tantos lugares, y que te pudiesen reconocer por ello. El poder reivindicativo del graffiti. Los amigos. Y como no, los graffitis que veía cuando viajaba de pequeño desde mi coche y que fueron mi ejemplo.
I remember that a couple of friends encouraged me in high school to go paint with them. But above all, what has motivated me and kept me going is the possibility of reaching so many people. To write and paint your name in so many places, and to be recognized for it. The protest power of graffiti. The friends. And of course, the graffiti that I saw when I was traveling as a child from my car and that were my example.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
No sabría definirme con un estilo único. Mi estilo siempre ha ido variando y evolucionando. Desde las letras más básicas del graffiti al wild style, como a terminar haciendo retratos y murales. Me gusta el dibujo desde pequeño, he ido a distintas escuelas de dibujo, hasta que por fin terminé la carrera de bellas artes, la cual determinó mucho mi manera de pintar. A partir de ahí, y sin dejar de lado las letras empecé a pintar más dibujos en la pared y sobretodo retratos.
Hablando como escritor, nunca me ha gustado repetir un mismo estilo. Aunque al final todos tenemos algo que nos identifica, como por ejemplo pintar letras mas complejas o con líneas rectas. Siempre trato de innovar en algo y no repetir nunca la misma pieza.
Pero si hablo como pintor, algo que siempre me ha motivado ha sido el realismo. La parte un poco más académica. Siempre que he pintado cuadros, he trabajado con la mancha, pocas veces he usado una línea para delimitar un contorno de una cara por ejemplo. Y al final eso lo he trasladado en parte al graffiti.
I wouldn’t know how to define myself with a single style. My style has always been varying and evolving. From the most basic letters of graffiti to wild style, to ending up making portraits and murals. I have liked drawing since I was little, I have gone to different drawing schools, until I finally finished my fine arts degree, which greatly determined my way of painting. From there, and without leaving aside the letters, I began to paint more drawings on the wall and especially portraits.
Speaking as a writer, I have never liked to repeat the same style. Although in the end we all have something that identifies us, such as painting more complex letters or with straight lines. I always try to innovate something and never repeat the same piece.
But if I speak as a painter, something that has always motivated me has been realism. The slightly more academic part. Whenever I have painted pictures, I have worked with stains; I have rarely used a line to delimit the outline of a face, for example. And in the end I have partly transferred that to graffiti.

Me parece genial, que te den la oportunidad a personas como yo, quizás no tan conocidas o con tantos seguidores. De mostrar lo que hacemos, mostrar nuestra perspectiva y formar una comunidad. Pues en estos tiempos, en los que a veces parece que, si no te avalan X seguidores, lo que haces no tiene el mismo valor. Agradezco poder sumar a esta iniciativa.
I think it’s great that they give you the opportunity to people like me, perhaps not as well known or with so many followers. To show what we do, show our perspective and form a community. Well, in these times, when it sometimes seems that, if you are not endorsed by X followers, what you do does not have the same value. I am grateful to be able to join this initiative.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Por supuesto, como supongo que todos los que pintamos durante un cierto tiempo, yo empecé a los 14 años, y he cambiado mucho de “tag”. Mi primera pieza la firmé como “Sok”, en una fábrica abandonada, que todavía sigue en pie 12 años después. Recuerdo como no tenía ni la más mínima idea de coger un bote, y le tuve que pedir a mi amigo (que quizás habría pintado 1 pieza más que yo en ese momento), que me ayudase a trazar-la pues no era capaz de delinear la “K” ni sabia por dónde iban las sombras ni los brillos. Terminé con la mano completamente plateada por el relleno plata, y recuerdo que al salir tuve que esconderla en el bolsillo porque justo se cruzó con nosotros una patrulla, que menos mal, no paró.
A día de hoy, los sentimientos han cambiado en muchos aspectos, no pintas por el mismo motivo. No te motivan los mismos objetivos. Al final lo que te motiva es el simple hecho de pintar, de coger un bote y echar un buen rato con los colegas, o a solas, mientras pintas, aprendes y mejoras.
Of course, like I suppose all of us who paint for a certain period of time, I started when I was 14, and I have changed my “tag” a lot. I tagged my first piece as “Sok”, in an abandoned factory, which is still standing 12 years later. I remember how I didn’t have the slightest idea of taking a spraycan, and I had to ask my friend (who perhaps would have painted 1 more piece than me at that time) to help me paint it because I wasn’t able to outline it. “K” didn’t even know where the shadows or the brightness went. I ended up with my hand completely silvered by the silver filling, and I remember that when I left I had to hide it in my pocket because a patrol just happened to cross us, and thank goodness, it didn’t stop.
Today, feelings have changed in many ways, you don’t paint for the same reason. You are not motivated by the same goals. In the end what motivates you is the simple act of painting, of taking a spraycan and having a good time with your friends, or alone, while you paint, learn and improve.

Muchas gracias por la oportunidad, me cuesta un poco ponerme a describir mi estilo o mi forma de pintar. Pues me voy descubriendo a cada mural o graffiti que hago. Y siempre trato de que a mis murales, cada uno les de su propia explicación. Ya que cada uno tenemos nuestra manera de ver las cosas.
