Why is your tag Rulos?
Rulos fué un mote que me puso un compañero de trabajo por mi pelo rizado. Empece en 98 pintando Fame, luego estuve muchos años firmando “jose” y cuando me pusieron el mote empece a firmar Rulos.
Rulos was a nickname a co-worker gave me because of my curly hair. I started in 98 painting Fame, then I was many years signing «jose» and when I got the nickname I started to sign Rulos.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Siempre me gusto el graffiti aunque no supiera bien lo que eso significaba al principio. Con12 años o así, en el año 94 mas o menos, empece con algunos amigos a hacer firmas por el barrio, a veces con canfor, otras con sprays. Eramos muy pequeños, con lo que muchas veces robábamos y otras guardábamos la paga semanal para comprar un spray, cada semana probábamos un color diferente.
Pero no fue hasta el año 98 cuando hice mi primer graffiti de verdad, gracias a mi amigo Suki que me enseñó los conceptos de relleno, 3D etc. y con el que empece a pintar en serio.
I always liked graffiti even though I didn’t really know what it meant at first. When I was 12 or so, in 94 or so, I started with some friends to sign around the neighborhood, sometimes with camphor, sometimes with sprays. We were kids, so many times we stole and other times we kept the weekly pay to buy a spray, every week we tried a different color.
But it wasn’t until 98 that I did my first real graffiti, thanks to my friend Suki who taught me the concepts of filler, 3D etc. and with which I started to paint seriously.
¿Qué tratas de decir con tus graffitis?
What do you try to say with your graffiti?
Al principio con el graffiti no trataba de decir nada realmente, solo quería evolucionar y conseguir un estilo perfecto, combinar unos colores increíbles, hacer la pieza mas limpia… Luego empecé a pintar cuadros donde sí trataba de decir algo, normalmente critica social, y eso se vió reflejado en mi graffiti de calle. Ya no eran solo letras, ahora se empezaba a mezclar mi estilo en lienzo con mi estilo en la calle, y en ocasiones hago un graffiti sin ningún mensaje mas que mi nombre y en otras ocasiones un mural que refleja de alguna manera una critica o mensaje social. Pero en ambos se mezclan los estilos y no es el graffiti puro de años atrás.
At first with graffiti I wasn’t really trying to say anything, I just wanted to evolve and get a perfect style, combine some incredible colors, make the piece cleaner… Then I started to paint pictures where I did try to say something, usually social criticism, and that was reflected in my street graffiti. It wasn’t just letters anymore, now I started to mix my style on canvas with my style on the street, and sometimes I make a graffiti without any message other than my name and other times a mural that somehow reflects a criticism or social message. But in both, the styles are mixed and it’s not the pure graffiti of years ago.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Difícil de responder, empece haciendo wild style, pero ahora mismo no sabría que etiqueta ponerle, o quizá es más wild style que nunca ya que no me limito con los códigos del graffiti… no se hago lo que me sale y punto.
Difficult to answer, I started out doing wild style, but right now I wouldn’t know what label to put on it, or maybe it’s wilder than ever since I don’t limit myself to graffiti codes… I don’t do what I do, period.

Me parece genial, es una web que conozco desde hace tiempo y me gusta la idea de dar a conocer a diferentes artistas de diferentes paises.
I think it’s great, it’s a website I’ve known for a long time and I like the idea of making different artists from different countries known.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza en serio fue en el año 98. Con mi amigo Suki en un muro enano de aproximadamente 1m. de alto. Era la valla de un colegio o instituto.
Fue un block style sin trazo ni nada, como SUKI hacía model pastel, tardé tiempo en conocer otros estilos de graffiti y empezar a meter 3d rallados con rellenos mas complicados. En esa época la única forma de aprender era pintando y moviendote en busca de graffiti.
My first serious piece was in 98. With my friend Suki on a small wall about 1m high. It was the fence of a school or high school.
It was a block style without a line or anything, as SUKI was doing cake model pastel, it took me a while to get to know other graffiti styles and start putting 3d grated with more complicated fillings. At that time the only way to learn was to paint and move around in search of graffiti.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti que te mantiene haciendolo?
What do you like the most about graffiti that keeps you doing it?
No se exactamente que es, pero es una droga.
Me encanta ese momento con amigos, pero pinto muchísimas veces yo solo.
Me encanta ese afán de superación , pero pinto muchísimas veces un plata de 10min. Me encanta la adrenalina, pero pinto muchísimas veces echando el día entero… En resumen, me encanta el graffiti.
I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s a drug.
I love that moment with friends, but I paint a lot of times by myself.
I love that desire to improve, but I paint a lot of times a 10min silver. I love the adrenaline, but I paint a lot of times throwing the whole day … In short, I love graffiti.
