Why is your tag SEW?
Cambié mi nombre muchas veces desde que empece a pintar. Me quedé con sew y esta basado en mis letras favoritas a la hora de escribirlas. No tiene mucho significado detrás del nombre de Sew. Sentia que estas letras tenían un montón de opciones, curvas, lineas verticales, horizontales y lineas diagonales. Cuando estaba descubriendo el nombre de Zew le cambie la z por la S y me flipo bastante ese cambio.
I changed my name several times since I started writing. I ended up with sew based on my favorite letter to write. It wasn’t so much the name or meaning behind it as it was what I could do with it. I felt like the letters had a wide variety of options. Curves, Vertical Lines, Horizontal Lines, and Diagonal lines. When I was first figuring out the name it started out as ZEW and flipped the Z to an S and that’s when the Spark hit.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
En el año 1985, el Hip Hop y el Break estaban en pleno apogeo. Estaba afuera de mi casa practicando mis movimientos con un pedazo de cartón de un electrodoméstico que mi padre había comprado.
El primo de mi vecino del Bronx estuvo en la ciudad ese fin de semana y vino a presentarse. También le gustaba hacer breakdance, como a la mayoría de los niños de nuestra edad. No sabía de qué estaba hablando. Me explicó que la mayoría de los chicos tenían un apodo basado en su estilo o personalidad o algo así. Entonces sacó una taquer y empezó a mostrarme sus tags en el cartón. FLARE # era un número después del nombre que no recuerdo y le pregunté cuál era el número. Él respondió «En Nueva York lo pones para que la gente sepa con quién estás y las crews lo sabrán». Además, si alguien más escribió el nombre era una manera de distinguirse de ellos. Así que me dio el nombre de RISE 68 me hizó un tag con un poco de estilo y algunas piezas simples para practicar.
Después de eso, fue la obsesión de toda mi vida, y aún lo es hoy, 34 años después.
1985, Hip Hop and Break dancing was in full swing. I was out front of my house practicing my moves on a piece of cardboard from an appliance my pop had bought.
My neighbor’s cousin from the Bronx was in town that weekend and came over to introduce himself. He also was into breakin’ much like most kids our age. he said “Yo watch write?” I didn’t know what he was talking about. he explain that most breaker’s had a nick name based on their style or personality or something. then he pulled out a uni and started showing me his tags on the cardboard. FLARE # the was a number after the name I can’t remember and I asked what the number was. He replied “In NY you put you crew or turf so people know who you are down with and gangs would know. Also, if someone else wrote the name it was a way to distinguish your self from them. So he gave me the name RISE 68 gave me a few hand style and some simple piece’s to practice.
After that it was my life long obsession. and still is today 34 years later.

What do you try to say with your graffiti?
ESTILO – Un enfoque clásico en las letras y estilo. Todo lo demás son extras. Todo se trata de las letras y de equilibrar el flow.
STYLE – A classic focus on letters and style. Everything else is extras. It’s all about the letters and balancing flow.

Creo que es genial presentar artistas que la gente no conoce.
cuando hay tantos escritores hoy en día, es difícil mantenerse al día con lo que está pasando en todo el mundo. En la víspera de Internet sólo había un par de revistas que tenías la suerte de tener en tus manos para ver lo que estaba pasando. Es por eso que tanta gente tiene la mayor parte de su influencia temprana de Style Wars y Subway Art/Spray Can Art. No tenías otra forma de ver lo que estaba pasando ahí fuera.
Así que sitios como el suyo abren otra vía de exposición.
I think its great to feature artists out there that people might not know about.
when there are so many writers nowadays , it is hard to keep up with what’s going on everywhere in the world. Back in the day before the internet there were only a couple rag magazines your were lucky to get your hands on to see what was going on. Thats why so many people have most of their early influence from Style Wars and Subway Art/Spray Can Art. You just didn’t have any other way to see what was going on out there.
So sites like yours open up another avenue for exposure.

Aquí abajo puedas ver la primera foto. En el verano de 1989. Recuerdo haber caminado por la vía del tren como lo hacíamos con frecuencia detrás de los centros comerciales locales, petardo a tags. Noté que sellaron un túnel con bloques de cemento nuevos. Dije voy a conseguir ese lugar antes de que alguien más lo consiga. Y ME HICE HICE UNA PIEZA! jaja Más tarde esa semana me las arreglé para reunir suficiente pintura para salir ese viernes por la noche. Llamé a uno de mis amigos para que viniera conmigo y me echara un vistazo. y se puso a trabajar. Incluso se saco a un personaje.
Considerando que fue la primera vez, no creo que haya salido tan mal.
No estaba a la altura, por supuesto, pero estaba orgulloso.
Here you can see my first picture, summer time 1989 I remember walking the train track as we frequently did behind local shopping centers catching tags. I noticed they sealed a tunnel off with brand new cinder blocks. I said I’m getting that spot before anyone else gets it. AND I’M DOING A PIECE! hahaha Later that week I managed to gather enough paint to go out that Friday night. Called up one of my boys to roll with me as a look out
and got busy. Even rocked a character.
Considering it was my first ever, I don’t think it came out too bad. hahaha.
It wasn’t nearly up to par of course but I was proud.

Todos los lugares que pueda conseguir. Es difícil ahora con las responsabilidades y la familia que tengo.
Me gustaría viajar más y pintar con gente nueva.
As many places I can get too. It’s hard now with the responsibilities and family I have but
I’d like to travel more and paint with new people.
¿Qué te gusta mas del graffiti que te mantiene haciendolo?
What do you like the most about graffiti that keeps you doing it?
Escapando de la realidad. Ser capaz de salir y olvidarme de mi rutina diaria y perderme en la pintura. Sólo la sensación de dejar caer la pintura es alta. La gente con la que me relaciono es tan buena como el dinero y siempre tenemos buenos momentos. son Hermanos.
Escaping reality. Being able to go out and forget about my daily grind and lose myself into painting. Just the feeling of laying down paint is a high. The people I roll with are all cool as cash and we always have good times. Brothers.
