He estado escribiendo «Solo» desde 1990 y («Solo RM» desde 2005). Uso otros nombres también, pero no quiero mencionarlos.
I’ve been writing «Solo» since 1990 («Solo RM» since 2005). I use other names too but I’m not going to mention those.
¿Qué tratas de decir con tus graffitis?
What you try to say with your graffiti?
Se me hace difícil describirlo, pero nunca fui el tipo de artista que tenia un mensaje especifico con mi graffiti. Tengo una idea de algo que pienso que se vería bien y que sea un reto técnico y artistico, y lo pinto. A veces me sale bien, y otras veces podría salirme mejor.
That’s hard to say, I was never the type of artist to really have a message with my graffiti. I get an idea for something I think will look good and test my skills, then I paint it. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes…it could go better.

What do you think about the idea of showing your art in this web as “elrincondelasboquillas.com”to let people know about you?
Me parece bien. Cualquier publicidad es buena, así que gracias por entrevistarme. Internet es enorme y ayuda a que la gente se conecte más y más. Creo que es una buenísima idea.
I think it’s cool. Promotion is always a good thing so I thanks for asking me to do this interview. The web is vast and it allows people to connect like never before. I think it’s a great idea.
¿Qué fue lo que te hizo coger un spray y ponerte a pintar en las calles?
What made you take a spray can and start painting on the streets?
Mi inspiracion fueron peliculas como “Wild Style,” “Style Wars” y “Beat Street.” Antes de verlas, no tenia ni idea de lo que era el graffiti o lo que se podia crear con un spray. Ver estas peliculas cuando era niño me abrió un mundo de creatividad que eventualmente me llevo a donde estoy ahora.
El reconocimiento también tuvo que hacer algo con todo. O sea, uno puede dibujar y pintar en su bloc de dibujo todo el dia, y nadie fuera de tu familia o tus amigos lo verían. Con el graffiti de repente, tu audiencia se multiplica por 5. De hecho la calidad de tu trabajo cambia (uno no puede comparar un dibujo detallado de un leon, por ejemplo con un tag enorme), pero así demonstrabas a otros “writers” que estuviste ahi y que tuviste algo que contribuir a la comunidad del graffiti, y con el tiempo quien sabía lo famoso que ibas a ser. Dentro de todo, era divertido.
I was inspired by movies such as Wild Style, Style Wars and Beat Street. Before then I had no idea what graffiti was or that you could create art with a spraycan. As a kid, it opened a world of creativity that would lead me to where I am today.
The recognition probably had something to do with it too. I mean, you can draw all day in your sketchbook or what have you, and no one outside your family or closest friends would see it. But with graffiti (spraypaint), suddenly, your audience just became 5x’s larger. Sure the quality of the your work changed, tagging can only look so good compared to a detailed drawing of say a lion, but it showed other writers that you were around and had something to contribute to the scene and time would tell just how big you would become. Overall, it was just fun.

!AMBAS! Desafortunadamente, no tengo tanto tiempo como antes. Cuando comence al igual que otros “writers,” todo se trataba de cantidad con un poquito de calidad. El punto era que vieran tu nombre y que estuvieras “ARRIBA.” Ahora, se trata más de calidad. El tiempo es muy valioso y tengo que ser muy especifico sobre cuando, que y hasta donde pinto. Estoy planeando un par de muros con otros artistas, y veremos como salen. No soy conocido por mi estilo de letras, pero las hago. Yo soy mas conocido por mis muñecos, pero también quiero probar cosas nuevas, así que esten al tanto y vean nuevas producciones con un estilo y composición muy fuertes.
BOTH! Unfortunately, I don’t have the massive amounts of free-time I used to have. When I was starting out, just like any other writer, it was about quantity with a splash of quality. It was all about getting your name seen and being «UP».Now, it’s the latter. Time is a precious commodity and I have to be very specific as to when and what and even where I paint. I’m planning a few walls with some like-minded artists and we’ll see how it goes.I’m not known for my letter style, but I do them. I am known for my characters but I want to try new things, so look for new productions with more of a strong compostion in nature.
¿Piensas que la sociedad acepta el graffiti?
Do you think that society accepts the graffiti?
¿Gaffiti como arte? En la industria de la publicidad, más que en otras. El Graffiti ha sido algo “increible” ya por mucho tiempo, así que espero que de esa forma de poco en poco sea aceptado más como una forma de arte.
¿Graffiti como vandalismo? Eso siempre será discutible, por lo menos en la sociedad Americana. Por un lado, tienes un grupo de “writers” de graffiti que pintan grandes murales y exhiben su talento con un spray. Por otro lado tienes a gente que solo les interesa poner su nombre en cualquier lugar, y no quieren nada con la parte artistica del graffiti. Ambos lados son expresiones de sentimientos humanos; ambos pueden ser vistos como arte, pero es el lado mas “hardcore” que la gente normal considera como vandalismo. Es una lucha constante pero solo la gente dentro del movimiento la entiende bien.
Los Europeos siempre han tenido una reputación para aceptar todos los aspectos del graffiti. Creo que en Europa se acepta más el graffiti que en los Estados Unidos.
Graffiti as art? Advertising mostly. It’s been the «cool» thing for a while now and hopefully that trickles down to a wider social acceptance of the art form.
Graffiti as vandalism? That will always be fought, in American society anyways.It’s like a double-edge sword. On the one hand you have this group of graffiti writers who paint beautiful murals and showcase their talent through the spraycan. Then you have the other side that’s only interested in painting their name on anything they can and want nothing to do with the art side of graffiti. Both are expressions of human feelings and emotions.both can be looked at as art but it’s the ‘hardcore’ side that make the average person say ‘it’s all vandalism’. It’s a constant struggle but only people in the movement really, fully understand it.
Europe has always had the reputation of acceptance toward all aspects of graffiti. They’re just more open minded toward it.
¿Por favor nos puedes dar algún consejo para ser igual de bueno que tu en este arte?
Please provide some tips to be just as good for you with this art?
Bueno, antes de involucrarme con el graffiti ya estaba dibujando muchísimo y me había imaginado ilustraciones, así que ya habia practicado mi técnica mucho y eso ayudo a que mi estilo resaltara del de un “writer” tipico. Uno también tiene que practicar todo el tiempo, y también ver fuera de tu circulo de influencia y dejar que otras cosas te inspiren.
Ahora se ven muchos tipos de estilos de graffiti en todo el mundo. Tu puedes tratar de replicar esos estilos o distinguirte haciendo algo completamente diferente, o hacer lo que te haga feliz.
Con respecto a “tips” , dudo que yo pueda enseñarle a un escritor como manejar un spray para que salga tal tipo de efecto visual, o que tipo de boquilla funciona mejor con que tipo de spray. Todo se trata de experimentar y practicar constantemente — así cada uno llega a tener avances artísticos a un nivel personal. Cada artista es diferente y lo que funcione para mi quiza no funcionaria para ti. Pero practicar es lo más importante.
Well, before I got into graffiti I was already drawing heavily and pictured myself illustrating books and what not so I had that practice to help me stand out from the typical bomber/tagger. Practice makes perfect and you need to look outside of your circle of influence and let those things inspire you. Today you see all kinds of styles of graffiti from all over the world. You can chose to do more of the same or try to stand out by doing something different or you can just do what makes you happy.
As far as actual «tips» I doubt I could school any writer out there as to how to hold a can to get this or that effect, or this cap works best with that can. It’s all experimenting and constant practice that leads to ‘breakthroughs’ on a personal level. Each artist is different and what works for me may not work for you. But practice does make perfect.

What is your style?
El mio. [ Riendose.] Si tuviera que describirlo, diría que es una mezcla de graffiti clásico de New York , anime Japones, comics Americanos y un poco de técnicas clasicas de ilustración. Me gustan los colores vivos y las caricaturas interesantes.
Mine. [ laughs.] If I had to break it down, I’d say it’s a mixture of classic N.Y. graffiti, Japanese animation, American comicbooks and someclassic illustration techniques. I like bold colors, and cool looking characters, whatever style that is, then there you go.
¿Qué piensas del graffiti en trenes?
What do you think of graffiti on trains?
Me encanta. Yo creci viendo “Style Wars” y “Beat Street”, así que siempre tengo un lugar especial en mi corazón para el graffiti en trenes. En los años 90, cuando revistas dedicadas al graffiti eran bien populares, vi que “writers” estaban pintando trenes a traves del mundo, y eso era algo muy increible. Todavía lo es. Me gusta ver trenes de varios paises y de aquí en Chicago. Me da gusto que la gente todavia lo haga, y me apena que Nueva York haya perdido una de las cosas que hizó a esa ciudad tan única.
I love it. I grew up with Style Wars and Beat Street so I have a special place in my heart for it. During the 90’s, when graffiti magazines were really big, I saw kids were painting trains all over the world and that was incredible to me. It still is. I like seeing trains from various countries and here at home. I’m glad people still do it and I think it’s sad NY lost one of the things that made the city so unique.
¿Puedes hablarnos del graffiti en chicago?
Can you talk about the graffiti in Chicago?
Tengo que advertirte que no estoy tan ligado al graffiti como lo solía estar hace años. Pinto cuando tengo tiempo y de hecho es bien relajado.
De mi perspectiva, diría que el mundo del graffiti en Chicago es muy diverso. Hay ciertos “writers” que pintan trenes de mercancías a menudo. Este verano hubo un aumento de “bombing” por toda la ciudad, a pesar del programa de extracción de graffiti del Alcalde Daley, que de hecho es un obstaculo formidable. Ultimamente, he notado que “writers” están pintando cosas más grandes y siendo más audaces en términos locales. El estilo “old school” también está regresando. Hay algunas personas que marcan tendencias, y también hay muchos que siguen, algo que pienso que es natural porque veo esa misma tendencia en otros tipos de arte.

I have to say that I am not as tied to graffiti as I used to be. I paint whenever I can find the time and it’s usually really chilled out.
From my own perspective, I will say that the graffiti scene here is pretty diverse. There are a few cats painting trains/frieghts steadily, there’s been a big surge in bombing this summer despite Mayor Daley’s graffiti removal program that is certainly a force to be rekoned with. Kids are getting bigger and bolder with their choice of spots to paint, the old school has made a come back in the past few years, like any era; there’s a few trendsetters and then there a whole slew of followers which I think is natural because I see the same thing in other disciplines of art.
Street artists are pretty big here; stickers and wheatpastes, collaborations between graffiti writers and street artists. You have a ton of art shows showcasing «low brow» art that draws a lot of graffiti artists to participate. And because of that, in part, I think you see a wider acceptance of graffiti as art in the overall art community and society.

How much money have you spent in sprays?
Demasiado, pero es un gasto que vale la pena.
Too much, but it was money well spent.
¿Cuál es tu crew?
What is your crew?
Tendría que decir AeroSoul Crew. Aunque creo que soy el único miembro. [ Riendose .] Fue la primera “crew” grande del que fui miembro. Todos los miembros de ASC ya lo han superado, o se han ido a otras “crews” o dejarón el nombre por alguna razon. Quizá ya no representan la “crew” hoy en día, pero para mi, siempre seran ASC.
Ahora soy parte de la “crew” CT y pinto con ellos cuando puedo. Son un grupo de artistas muy buenos y buena gente.
I would have to say Aerosoul Crew. Even though I’m seemingly the only member (laughs). It was the first big crew I was in and after that there really isn’t anything else. All the members have since moved on, started other crews, or dropped the crew name for whatever reasons. They may not rep’ the crew anymore, but they’ll always be ASC, to me.
Nowadays I’m also part of the CT crew and paint with them when I can. They’re a cool bunch of guys and put up with me.

Aquí en Chicago, soy seguidor de Agent, Trixter, Slang, Teen Wolf, Aim1, Fess, Haste, Crush, Tsel, Answer, Disrok, Casper, Rude, Fire, Cove, Deep, Quetzal, Omens, Kane y muchisimos más.
