¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
La verdad es que no lo sé. He tenido varios nombres a lo largo de mi carrera y, tras una larga pausa en el graffiti, quería algo nuevo y fresco. Me gustaba el aspecto y el sonido de Skewer, pero para el piecing quería algo más corto, así que opté por SQWR.
I don’t really know. I’ve had a few names along the way, and after a very long break from graffiti, I wanted something new and fresh. I liked the look and sound of Skewer, but for piecing I wanted something shorter, so I went with SQWR.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Dibujé mis primeras letras a los 10/11 años tras ver algunos graffitis en una revista local de skate/surf. Crecí en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, y desde que empecé a fijarme en él y a aficionarme, siempre me quedé absolutamente fascinado por los estilos locales, normalmente grandes piezas cromadas o blancas y negras, que se veían por todas las paredes vibracretas y los trenes. Tipos como Toe, Sace y Disk alimentaron definitivamente mi temprano amor por las letras.
I drew my first letters at age 10/11 after seeing some graffiti in a local skate/surf magazine. I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and after I first started noticing it and getting into it, I was always absolutely transfixed by the local styles, usually large chrome or white and black pieces, that were all over the vibracrete walls and trains. Guys like Toe, Sace, and Disk definitely fuelled my early love for letters.

What is your style?
Creo que aún estoy desarrollando mi estilo. Prefiero los graffitis sencillos pero con personajes, y eso es quizá lo que intento conseguir. Nunca quiero estancarme y pintar el mismo boceto o estilo una y otra vez, y suelo pintar el mismo estilo unas tres veces antes de aburrirme de él y tener que volver al dibujo aburrido. También me están gustando mucho los personajes, y espero desarrollar esto aún más y encontrar distintas formas de incorporar características a mis estilos de letras.
I think I’m still developing my style. I prefer graffiti that is simple but has real character, and that’s maybe what I am trying to achieve. I never want to become stagnant and paint the same sketch or style over and over again, and I usually paint the same style around three times before I get bored of it and have to go back to the drawing bored. I’m also really enjoying characters, and I’m hoping to develop this further and find different ways to incorporate characteristics into my letter styles.

Estoy muy agradecido por la oportunidad. Me enamoré del graffiti antes de la gran era de Internet, así que ver películas y leer entrevistas en Stylefile y publicaciones similares era alucinante y la única pequeña ventana que tenía a un mundo casi mítico. Que ahora me pidan que responda a algunas preguntas y que mi trabajo aparezca en una plataforma similar, aunque digital, es un gran honor.
I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I fell in love with graffiti before the big internet era, so seeing flicks and reading interviews in Stylefile and similar publications was mind-blowing and the only little window I had into an almost mythical world. To be asked to answer some questions now and get my work featured on a similar, albeit digital, platform is a great honour.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primer estilo a todo color fue en Sudáfrica, en una pared de mi jardín trasero. Aunque era seguro y completamente legal, recuerdo el subidón que me dio. Y desde entonces estoy completamente obsesionado.
Nunca me metí de lleno en la escena de allí y, aunque dibujaba las 24 horas del día, sólo hacía algunas piezas más aquí y allá, en habitaciones de amigos y cosas así. Me mudé al Reino Unido en 2008 e inmediatamente quise experimentar Londres y ver el graffiti. Todo el mundo tiene probablemente una idea ligeramente diferente del graffiti, o una sensación, la forma en que lo ven en su mente. Para mí siempre ha sido la imagen o la sensación de un paisaje urbano frío, gris y lluvioso, con bloques blancos sobre ladrillos desnudos. Londres era perfecto. A pesar de ello, hice un par de obras aquí y allá, pero se desvaneció y nunca me quedé. Después de eso, el graffiti seguía vivo en mi mente, pero nunca llegué a dibujar o pintar. Eso fue hasta 2022, cuando algo dentro de mi cerebro me dijo que despertara de una puta vez y dejara de ser un espectador, admirando la escena desde lejos. Desde entonces, no he parado y no pienso hacerlo pronto.
My first full colour style was back in South Africa on a wall in my back garden. Even though it was safe and completely legal, I can remember the rush it gave me. And I’ve been completely obsessed ever since.
I never really got into the scene over there, and even though I sketched 24/7, I only ever did a few more pieces here and there, friends’ bedrooms and the likes. I moved to the UK in 2008 and immediately wanted to experience London and see the graffiti. Everyone probably has a slightly different idea of graffiti, or a feeling, the way they see it in their mind’s eye. For me it’s always been this image or feeling of a cold, grey, rainy cityscape, with white blockbusters on bare brick. London was perfect! Despite this, I did a couple of pieces here and there, but it sort of fizzled out and I never stuck with it. After that, graffiti was still alive in the back of my mind but I never really sketched or painted. That was until 2022, when something inside my brain told me to wake the fuck up and stop being a bystander, admiring the scene from afar. Since then, I haven’t stopped, and I don’t plan to anytime soon.
