¿Qué te motivó para empezar el proyecto de Street Art Cities?
What motivated you to get started doing Street Art Cities project?
Empecé como fotógrafo de arte callejero y al final busqué un sitio web para mostrar todo el arte hermoso de mi ciudad. Después de investigar un poco me encontré con este genial sitio web basado en Google Maps en Heerlen (Holanda) y después de conocernos y de una buena charla decidimos lanzar ese mismo sitio web en Amberes (Streetartantwerp.com). Y nació Street Art Cities, actualmente activa en más de 600 ciudades tenemos al menos un local (el llamado cazador) en cada ciudad que documenta, comparte y promueve la escena de arte urbano local a nuestra creciente audiencia.
I started as a street art photographer and was ultimately looking for a website to show all the beautiful art in my city. After some research I came across this cool google maps based website in Heerlen (the Netherlands) and after meeting and a good talk we decided to launch that same website in Antwerp (Streetartantwerp.com). And Street Art Cities was born, currently active in over 600 cities we have at least one local (the so called hunter) in every city who documents, shares and promotes the local urban art scene to our continious growing audience.

What do you want to say with your project?
Con la plataforma Street Art Cities nos gusta documentar todo el arte urbano del mundo gracias a una comunidad global. Tenemos por lo menos un hunter en todas las ciudades y se convierten en el embajador del arte callejero de su ciudad, promueven la ciudad pero aún más importante es que dan a los artistas locales una plataforma internacional instantánea.
Intentamos salvar la brecha entre los amantes del arte callejero, los artistas, las galerías, los festivales y los municipios, pero también nos esforzamos por añadir contenido de calidad para que el público en general entienda mejor esta forma de arte emergente.
Además, tenemos una aplicación, la aplicación gratuita Street Art Cities, que ya se puede utilizar para explorar 30 ciudades. Nuestro objetivo final es introducir todas las ciudades en la aplicación, convirtiéndola en la primera aplicación universal de esta escala.
With the Street Art Cities platform we like to document all urban art in the world thanks to a global community. We have at least one hunter in all cities and they become the street art ambassador for their town, they promote the city but even more important they give local artists an instant international platform.
We try to bridge the gap between street art lovers, artists, galleries, festivals and municipalities, but also we thrive to add quality content so the general public understands this emerging artform better.
Next to that we have an app, the free Street Art Cities app which you can use to explore 30 cities already, our end goal is to introduce every city in the app making it the first universal app of this scale.

How many artist we can find in your app?
Es difícil de decir, porque tenemos algunos por doble, algunos artistas escriben bajo diferentes nombres, pero creo que ya tenemos unos 3000 artistas en vivo. Con los hunters subiendo cada día en cada rincón del planeta, este número aumenta rápidamente.
Hard to say, because we have some doubles, misspelled and some artists write under different names, but i guess we have about 3000 artists live already. With hunters uploading every day in every corner of the planet, this number increases fast.

Nos encanta colaborar y compartir el mensaje. Queremos que la gente nos conozca y que sepan que nos encantaría trabajar juntos. Cuanto más grande sea esta comunidad, la gente entenderá mejor el verdadero valor de este arte «rebelde». Y también podríamos publicar entrevistas en nuestro blog.
We love to collaborate and share the message. We want people to know of us and let them know we’ d love to work together. The bigger this community gets the better people will understand the true value of this ‘rebelious’ art. And we could even publish interviews on our blog too.

Do you remember the first day online?
No puedo recordarlo, pero lo que sí veía son los mensajes semanales que recibimos de la gente que nos descubre o que ha sido parte de la comunidad. Siento mucho orgullo por lo que hacen y por cómo los apoyamos.
I can’t really remember it, but what I do see is the weekly messages we get from people who discovers us or who have been part of the community. I sense a lot of pride in what they do and how we support them.
¿Qué piensas sobre el graffiti y street art y murales en tu pais?
What do you think about graffiti and street art, murals in your country?
Vivo en Amberes, la segunda ciudad más grande después de Bruselas y tenemos una escena de graffiti y arte callejero decente. Amberes ha sido una de las primeras ciudades en organizar el Encuentro Anual de Estilos y tiene una de las mayores localizaciones de Europa (casi 3000m²). Tenemos varios distritos en Amberes donde puedes encontrar mucho arte. En mi sitio web Streetartantwerp.com puedes descubrir casi 300 lugares.
I live in Antwerp, the 2nd biggest city behind Brussels and we have a decent graffiti and street art scene. Antwerp has been one of the first cities to organise the yearly Meeting of Styles and have of the largest locations in Europe (almost 3000m²). We got several districts in Antwerp where you can find a lot of great art. On my website Streetartantwerp.com you can discover almost 300 locations.
¿Cómo te imaginas el graffiti y el mural en el futuro (Año 2085)?
How do you imagine graffiti and muralism in the future (Year 2085)?
Es difícil de decir, este arte underground ha estado mal visto durante años, pero gracias a los medios sociales el carácter visual se ha convertido en un catalizador para pasar del underground a una de las formas de arte más influyentes en décadas. Así que creo que esto acaba de empezar, pero la gentrificación está a la vuelta de la esquina. Mientras los artistas mantengan el equilibrio entre el trabajo encargado y el trabajo externo y no vendan su alma, todo estará bien. El carácter rebelde del graffiti siempre será un contrapeso para el arte callejero más aceptado.
Hard to tell, this underground art has been frowned upon for years, but thanks to social media the visual character has become a catalyst to go from underground to one of the most influential artform in decades. So I think this has only just begun, but gentrification lies around the corner. As long as artists maintain balance between commisioned work and outside work and don’t sell their soul, it will all be allright. The rebelious chracter of graffiti will always be a counterweight for the more accepted street art.

Todo el mundo puede unirse, ya que ya estamos activos en más de 600 ciudades, tenemos que comprobar cómo ampliar el equipo. Pero también muchas ciudades todavía esperan cazadores y activación.
