Why is your tag WHEN?
Cuando empecé a pintar, pinté algunas otras palabras durante aproximadamente un año o dos y sentía que estaba empezando a resolver un poco mis movidas internas. Quería empezar de nuevo y en enero del 2000, comencé a pintar letras. Todavía era muy toyaco y tenia muchas cosas que aprender, pero quería separarme del estilo de «pastilla aplastada» con el que había empezado. De vez en cuando, me canso de mis letras y me ramifico con algunos nombres para mantener las cosas más interesantes, pero parece que sigo volviendo a lo mismo.
When I started writing, I wrote some other words for about a year or two and felt that I was sort of starting to figure things out a little bit. I wanted to start fresh and in January of 2000, started writing When, just because I liked the letters. There was still much toyness and many things to learn, but I wanted to separate myself from the «squished play-dough» style I had started with. every now and again, I get tired of my letters and branch out with some side names to keep things more interesting, but I seem to keep coming back to When.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Comencé a taquear a mediados de los años 90 como algo divertido y destructivo siendo adolescente. teníamos una crew de skate, ASP, pero no teníamos una idea real de qué era el graffiti o cómo debía ser. luego, comenzamos a hacer punk rock e izquierdistas, flyers anticapitalistas y fuimos pegándolos por toda la ciudad. Cuando me mudé a Cincinnati en 1998, eso era lo que estaba haciendo y, por primera vez, vi graffiti realmente bueno. había paredes y manchas hechas por Merz, Jaser / Rapes (RIP), Five, Devious, Verbs, Optik y sear. TSC tenía las paredes legales con buen aspecto y TA tenía todo petado. Conocí a la gente que lo estaba haciendo casi de inmediato y, a partir de ese momento, me fascinaron las letras y pronto dejé atrás a la gente con mi política para centrarme en los graffitis directos y sensatos.
I started tagging in the mid-90’s as something fun and destructive to do as a teenager. we had a skate crew, ASP that we would put up. but we had no real idea of what graffiti was or what it should look like. it was more about the giggle I would get vandalizing things. then, we started making punk rock and leftist, anti-capitalist flyers and wheat pasting them around town. when I moved to Cincinnati in 1998, that was what I was doing and for the first time saw really good «real» graffiti. there were walls and spots done by Merz, Jaser/Rapes (RIP), Five, Devious, Verbs, Optik, and sear. TSC had the legal walls looking nice and TA had the spots grilled. I met the people who were doing it almost right away and from then on, was fascinated with the letters and soon left behind bludgeoning people over the head with my politics to focus on straight-up, no-nonsense graffiti.

What do you try to say with your graffiti?
Como dije antes, es sobre todo estético. El mensaje es que está ahí. Estoy mucho más preocupado por mi disfrute al hacerlo que por lo que otros obtienen de ello. si estoy hablando con alguien, son otros escritores, y rara vez digo algo más que «hola».
like I said before, its is mostly aesthetic. the message is that it is there. I am way more concerned about my enjoyment in doing it, than what others get out of it. if I am speaking to anyone, it is other writers, and i’m rarely saying anything more than «hi».
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
No sé si hay un término para ello. Aprecio las sólidas tradiciones de las letras de Nueva York, pero me encanta cuando las personas rompen las reglas de la manera correcta. Supongo que me he vuelto más conservador con esto en los últimos años, pero trato de mantenerme en algún lugar entre una fórmula rígida y un total holgazán.
I don’t know if there is a term for it. I appreciate the solid traditions of the New York letterforms, but love when people break the rules in the right way. i guess I’ve gotten more conservative with it in the last several years, but I try to stay somewhere between a rigid formula and total loosey-goosey.

Es genial. No hay sustituto para pararse frente a una pieza en la vida real, pero eso no siempre es posible y ver una imagen en una pantalla es mejor que nunca verla. en estos días la gente probablemente vea más graffiti que nunca debido a las redes sociales. pero está en una pantalla de 3 pulgadas y la mayoría de las personas probablemente se paran un segundo, tal vez dos para ver y juzgar una pieza, darle un corazón y pasar a la siguiente. Las revistas son mi forma favorita de ver los graff que no puedo pararme enfrente. Los coloco en la parte de atrás del inodoro, los miro por encima y por encima de ellos y realmente puedo pasar un rato con mis piezas favoritas. Los sitios web también son buenos si los estás viendo en una pantalla más grande que un teléfono, pero ya no los miro mucho, porque IG es más conveniente cuando estoy sentado en el trono. Si tuviera otro trabajo aburrido sentado frente a una computadora, podría hacerlo.
It’s cool. there is no substitute for standing in front of a piece in real life, but that is not always possible and seing a picture on a screen is better than never seeing it. these days people look at probably more graffiti than ever because of social media. but it is on a 3 inch screen and most people probably take one second, maybe two to look at and judge a piece, give it a heart and move on to the next one. magazines are my favorite way to see graff i can’t stand in front of. i put them on the back of the toilet and look over them and over them and really get to spend some time with my favorite pieces in them. websites are good too if you’re viewing them on a bigger screen than a phone, but i don’t look at them very much at all any more, because IG is just more convenient when i’m sitting on the crapper. if i had another boring-ass job sitting in front of a computer, i might though.

What would you do if you weren’t a graffiti writer?
Ni siquiera puedo imaginar eso. es tan importante el pasatiempo real del graffiti, porque casi todo lo que hago y tengo es a través de conexiones que he hecho en ese mundo. La mayoría de los trabajos que he tenido y otras oportunidades han tenido algo que ver con otros escritores. lo más importante. Su impacto en mi vida es profundo y le debo mucho. Lo extraño todos los días y trato de mantenerlo de una manera u otra.
I can’t even imagine that. not because of the actual pastime of graffiti is so important, but because almost everything i do and have is through connections i have made in that world. most of the jobs i have had and other opportunities have all had something to do with other writers. most importantly, Rapes. his impact on my life runs deep and i owe him a lot. i miss him every day and try to keep him up in one way or another.
