Where does your pseudonime come from?
WYTE, las iniciales de mi nombre (Yousef Tellayh: La «Y» y la «T» pero convertidas en 4 letras para ser legítimas como una pieza de graffiti).
WYTE, my name’s initials (Yousef Tellayh: The “Y” and the “T” but turned into 4 letters to be legit as a graffiti piece).
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un artista?
What motivated you to get started being an artist?
De niño siempre solía pintar y dibujar, probando múltiples medios, hasta que a los 17 años un colega de un colegio británico me habló de que el arte del graffiti es una forma de arte en la que puedes usar un bote de spray para escribir tu nombre en una pared, la idea sonó genial y provocó una respuesta espontánea en la que me apresuré a ir al «cibercafé» más cercano después del colegio y ¡navegue en webs de graffiti para buscar fotos de graffiti!
Pasé varios meses después de ese día dibujando graffitis en papel. Conocí a «ALI alias SMOK» en la universidad al año siguiente y me di cuenta de que estaba en una etapa similar en la que ambos acordamos probar el spray de pintura en la pared juntos. Este fue el comienzo…
I‘ve always used to paint and draw as a kid, trying multiple mediums, until i was 17 and a British school colleague told me about graffiti art being an artform where you get to use a spray can to write your name on a Wall, the idea sounded great and triggered a spontaneous response where i rushed to the closest “internet café” at the time after school and surfed the web for graffiti photos!
I spent multiple months after that day sketching graffiti on paper. I met “ALI aka SMOK” in the university the next year and figured out he was at a similar stage where we both agreed on trying the spray Paint on the Wall together. This was the beginning…
¿Qué tratas de decir con tus graffitis?
What do you try to say with your graffiti?
Empecé pintando palabras al azar, a veces sin llevar ningún significado, me preocupaba más por la estética y cómo se veía en una pieza entera. Quería petar las paredes del barrio con colores y diseños atractivos. Con el tiempo empecé a darme cuenta de que tiene que ver más con tu nombre como escritor, también estaba jugando al juego «Marc Eko’s Getting Up» en mi consola PS2, ese juego me dio verdadera inspiración junto a los múltiples documentales y películas que he visto (Style Wars, Beat Street, State Your Name,…). Me llamé a mi mismo «Y2T», firme durante unos 4 años en las calles de los suburbios de Beirut, antes de cambiar a «WYTE» que también firme durante otros 3 años siguientes.
En esa etapa decidí experimentar con mi lengua materna (árabe), y empecé a escribir mi nombre «YOUSEF», ya no era anónimo porque en esa etapa he pasado del vandalismo a los anuncios legales y a las piezas por encargo.
Durante los últimos 4 años hasta este momento he cambiado a pintar sólo personajes que me parecen más divertidos y disfruto más que las letras recientemente… Los personajes son divertidos, me concentro en las expresiones faciales, y a veces en temas sociales humorísticos.
It started as writing random words, sometimes without even carrying any meanings, i cared most for the aesthetics and how it looked like as a whole piece. I wanted to bomb the Hood walls with good looking colors and designs. With time i started to figure out that it has to do more with your name as a writer, was also playing “Marc Eko’s Getting Up” on my PS2 console, that game gave me real inspiration alongside the multiple documentaries and movies i’ve watched (Style Wars, Beat Street, State Your Name,…). I called myself “Y2T”, tagged this nickname for like 4 years on the streets of Beirut suburbs, before switching to “WYTE” which I also tagged for 3 other following years.
At that stage I decided to experiment with my mother language (Arabic), and started writing my name “YOUSEF”, it wasn’t anonymous anymore beacause at that stage i have switched from vandalism to legal spots and commissioned pieces.
Through the last 4 years up to this moment I have switched to painting only characters which i find more fun to Paint and enjoy more than lettering recently… The characters are funny, I focus on the facial expressions, props, and sometimes humourous social issues.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza fue un verdadero desastre comparándola con donde estoy ahora. Elegí escribir la palabra «ONE», no tengo ni idea de por qué… El estilo era mayormente cercano al «Block Style», creo que es una relación amorosa entre Toys y Block Styles… Utilicé un bote azul para los contornos, intenté rellenarla con un spray blanco de mierda por tener un color blanco leche (la pared chupaba la pintura y desaparecía), así que la deje sólo con líneas azules y relleno claro.
Esa primera pieza me dio escalofríos. Me provocó dos sentimientos opuestos en ese momento, una verdadera satisfacción y placer que me dijo que definitivamente estaba intentando esto de nuevo, pero una verdadera decepción y frustración por la diferencia de calidad en comparación con lo que vi en la web! (esto último fue muy importante para enseñarme a respetar y a bajarme a la tierra, volviéndome más humilde y un verdadero trabajador para poder subir mi estilo y mi juego técnico)
My first piece was a real mess comparing it to where I am now. I chose to write the word “ONE”, no clue why… The style was mostly close to the “Block Style”, I think it’s a love relation between Toys and Block Styles… Used a blue can for the outlines, tried to fill in with a White shitty can but it looked like milk (the Wall sucked the Paint and it disappeared), so I kept it only blue lines and clear fill in.
That first piece gave me chills. It stoked two opposite feelings in me at the time, a real fulfillment and pleasure that told me I was definitely trying this again, yet a real disappointment and frustration because of the difference in quality compared to what I saw on the web! (the latter was really important to teach me respect and bring me down to earth, becoming more humble and a real hard worker in order to get my style and technique game up)

Forme una crew con SMOK cuando empezamos a pintar nos llamamos «BOGY3 Crew» el nombre es una extraña combinación de nuestros nombres. Mi hermano «Ebrahim aka EBRA» se unió un par de meses después y tuvimos que convertir el nombre del equipo en «BROS Crew», una abreviatura de «Brothers». Varias personas entraron y salieron a lo largo de los años, éramos los tres miembros originales y fijos y todavía continua la crew así…
I formed a crew with SMOK when we started painting that we called “BOGY3 Crew” the name is a weird combination of our names. My brother “Ebrahim aka EBRA” joined couple of months later and we had to turn the crew name into “BROS Crew”, an abbreviation for “Brothers”. Several people entered and left over the years, we were the three original and fixed members and still…

Nunca pienses dos veces en hacer una pieza, una vez que la tengas como pensamiento, llévala a la realidad.
Aprende a aceptar la crítica constructiva, y sigue practicando. Recuerda, nunca estarás «¡para siempre!», así que mantén la rutina.
Keep your head high and your middle finger higher!
Never think twice about getting a piece done, once you have it as a thought, bring it out to reality.
Learn to accept constructive criticism, and keep on practicing. Remember, you’ll never be “There Yet!’, so keep the grind.
