¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Siempre me ha gustado pintar. Cuando tenía 5 años, recuerdo que me sentaba en la consulta de la terapeuta y no hablaba si no me daba pintura para jugar. Creo que pintar me permite encontrar sentido a mí misma: a mis pensamientos, sentimientos y creencias sobre el mundo. Si supiera cómo dejarlo y llevar una vida normal, lo haría, pero para mí pintar es como respirar. Lo necesito para sobrevivir.
I have always loved painting. When I was 5 years old, I remember sitting in the therapist’s office and I wouldn’t talk unless she gave me paint to play with. I find that painting allows me to make sense of myself – my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about the world. If I knew how to quit and live a normal life, I would but making art is like breathing to me. I need it to survive.

What is your style?
Me considero dentro de la categoría de «surrealista pop lowbrow», aunque mi trabajo también está relacionado con el kawaii y está muy influido por las ilustraciones naturalistas.
I consider myself to be in the “lowbrow pop surrealist” category, though my work also ties in with Kawaii and is heavily influenced by naturalist illustrations.

Do you remember the first piece?
La primera pieza de mi serie de terrarios más reciente fue en 2022. Volvía en coche de una gran exposición individual y no sabía qué hacer a continuación. Hice un débil boceto en mi cuaderno de un tríptico – 3 cráneos humanos que contenían animales con cascadas como lágrimas. Desde entonces no he dejado de hacerlos.
The first piece in my most recent terrarium series was in 2022. I was driving back from having just created a huge solo show and I felt like I didn’t know what my next moves were. I made a feeble sketch in my sketchbook of a triptych – 3 human skulls containing animals with waterfalls as the tears. I’ve been making them ever since.
