Me llamo Claudio Acuña , tengo 38 años y vivo con ni pareja e hija en Puerto Montt, Chile.
My name is Claudio Acuña. I am 38 years old and I live with my partner and my daughter in Puerto Montt, Chile.
¿Qué te motivó para ser un escultor de Papel?
What motivated you to be a paper sculptor?
Las materias del colegio eran muy aburridas así que pasaba la mayoría de las clases a jugando con lo que tuviera a mano, y siempre hay papel en todos lados, así que fue un paso natural comenzar a experimentar con el papel. Después estudie diseño Industrial y continúe experimentando con el papel y otros materiales como el Metal o la Madera, pero siempre vuelvo al papel, debe ser porque me acomoda.
The school subjects were very boring so I spent most of the classes playing with anything I had on my hands, and there’s always paper everywhere, so it was a natural step to start to experiment with paper. Afterwards I studied Industrial Design and I continued to experiment with paper and other materials like Steel or Wood, but I always come back to paper, it must be because it suits me.

What do you try to say with your artworks?
Mi intención es crear obras que comuniquen, los museos o galerías de arte contemporáneo son circuitos cerrados, silenciosos y con obras que solo entiende el autor, a mí me interesa comunicar, crear obras que puedan ser disfrutadas por todos, que no requieran de una retórica o explicación académica para ser entendida, por eso instalo las figuras en la vía publica, es una forma de democratizar el arte y hacerlos accesible a todos.
My intention is to create works that communicate, the museums and contemporary art galleries are closed and silent circuits, with works that only the author understands, I’m interested in communicating, to create works that can be enjoyed by everyone, that don’t require a rhetoric or academic explanation to be understood, that’s why I install the figures on public streets, it’s a way to democratize art and to make it approachable to anyone.
¿Cuánto tiempo dedicas a colocar tus esculturas de papel?
How long it takes you to place up the paper sculpture?
El año 2017 generamos un proyecto donde instalamos 250 esculturas en toda la ciudad de Puerto Montt durante 10 meses, ese es el proyecto más grande realizado hasta el momento, la creación de cada figura toma entre 3 a 4 horas aprox cada una, considerando que primero hay que construir el papel y después plegarlo a la forma final sin ningún corte, solo con pliegues
The year 2017 we generated a project where we installed 250 sculptures in the whole city of Puerto Montt for 10 months, that’s the biggest project made so far, the creation of each figure takes between 3 to 4 hours approximately, considering that first you have to build the paper and then fold it to the final shape without any cut, only with creases.

I like elrincondelasboquillas website because it gives a showcase of the global Art that’s being made and it’s built from an intention without profit, which in these times is difficult to achieve. To me it’s an honor to be on this website. I also have great respect for graffiti artists and quality street art.

La lista es larguísima, pero me gustaría mencionar a Jim Henson, Ron Mueck, Theo Jansen, JR, Yoshitoshi Kanemaki Mothmeister, Paul Aster, Jodorowsky, George Mellies, Pen & Teller, Jim Jarmush, la compañía de Teatro Royal Deluxe, Inti, Banksy por su postura y el fallecido Eric Joisel.

¿Podrías darnos algún consejo para empezar a hacer una escultura de papel?
Could you mind saying us some advice to start doing a papel sculpture?
Recomiendo partir por el Origami y después no tener miedo a cortar el papel y armar creaciones propias, el Origami se basa en solo doblar y no cortar, eso lo hace extremadamente difícil y puede asustar a algunos, pero con paciencia y un poco de esfuerzo se puede lograr, actualmente en YouTube hay cientos de tutoriales para aprender
I recommend starting with Origami and then not to be afraid to cut the paper and put together your own creations, Origami is based on just folding and not cutting, that makes it extremely difficult and can scare some people, but with patience and a little effort it can be done, nowadays there are hundreds of tutorials to learn in YouTube.
¿Cuál es tu trabajo real?
What is your real job?
Soy profesor de Universidad en cátedras de Diseño y Arte. Aunque también considero un trabajo real la creación artística, aunque en Chile no se pueda vivir de eso.
I’m a university professor of Art and Design lectures. Although I also consider artistic creation to be a real work, in Chile you cannot live from that.

Atrévanse a romper un poco los moldes, a perderle el miedo al ridículo. La invitación es a jugar y a crear.
