¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Está elegido de un cereal de los años 70 que solía comer. Quería un nombre más personal para mí. Escribo Quisp y Kwisp.

It’s taken from a cereal from the 70’s I used to eat. It was my favorite cereal.I wanted a name that was more personal to me. i write Quisp and Kwisp.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

A principios de los años 80, estaba metido en el B-boying y me gustaba mucho el hip-hop. Tenía un amigo que aprendió a pintar estilo cholo de unos primos que tenía en la costa oeste. Después vi un vídeo de Rocksteady Crew en Nueva York en el que hacían un panned  hacia atrás con la cámara y todos los tejados tenían graffitis. A partir de ese momento me enganché. Como la mayoría, me topé con el Subway Art. Creo que no vi el Spray can Art hasta que conocí a East (ATT crew) en el 89′. Diría que East fue mi mayor motivación. Me enseñó todo lo que necesitaba saber sobre el graffiti. Más tarde me uní a ATT y conocí a Scribe, otra gran influencia que me enseñó muchas técnicas.

I was in to B-boying in the early 80’s and just was really into hip-hop. I had a friend that learned cholo style writing from cousins he had on the West coast. After that I watched a video with Rocksteady Crew in New York and they panned back with the camera, all the rooftops had graffiti on them. From that moment on I was hooked. Like most I came across Subway Art. I don’t think I saw Spray can Art until I met East(ATT crew) in 89’. I would say East was my biggest motivation. He showed me everything I needed to know about Graffiti Later I joined ATT and met Scribe witch is another huge influence taught me a lot of techniques.

¿Cuál es tu estilo? 

What is your style?

Realmente no puedo decir cuál es mi estilo… Puedo decir que mi estilo viene de Chicago y se basa en principios de equilibrio y fluidez. Estoy influenciado por muchos escritores diferentes. Escritores como Bacon, Kem, Skore, Aura, Can 2, Audio 57, Skare. Escritores de la vieja escuela como Sew (de Filadelfia) y Web (Nueva York). Mis principales influencias son mi propio equipo (ATT). Tipos como Years, Emit, Serval, Meks, Kuaze, Quetzal, Pherz, Codak, Satyr, Jash. Pero sobre todo de mis dos mentores, East y Scribe. East me enseñó el equilibrio y la fluidez y me enseñó cómo funciona la estructura de las letras y las técnicas para pintarlas. Diría que gran parte de mi estructura de letras y mis conexiones proceden de East. Scribe me enseñó técnicas de corte y cómo ejecutar un personaje de la forma correcta.

En cuanto a mi estilo… es una combinación de muchos estilos e influencias que me precedieron y de los mentores que he tenido a lo largo de los años.

I really can’t say what my style is… I can say my style comes from Chicago and is based on an early principles of balance and flow. I’m influenced by many different writers. Writers like Bacon, Kem, Skore, Aura, Can 2, Audio 57, Skare. Old school writers like Sew(from Philly), and Web(New York). My main influences are my own crew (ATT). Guys like Years, Emit, Serval, Meks, Kuaze, Quetzal, Pherz, Codak, Satyr, Jash. But mainly from my 2 mentors East and Scribe. East taught me about balance and flow and showed me how letter structure works and the techniques to paint them. I would say a lot of my letter structure and connections come from East. Scribe taught me cutting techniques and how to execute a character the right way.

As for my style…It’s a combination of many styles and influences that came before me and the mentors I’ve had throughout the years.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?  

Lo hice en una pared de construcción justo en 2 intersecciones muy transitadas en una calle. Recuerdo el miedo que me daba, porque no tenía ni idea de cómo hacerlo. Yo era el primero en mi ciudad en hacer este tipo de graffiti y realmente no tenía ni idea de cómo hacerlo. Recuerdo que llevaba un rodillo y una brocha (ni siquiera sabía que se utilizaba pintura en spray). La primera vez que lo hice me persiguió la policía. Me escondí en unos arbustos unos 30 minutos antes de que la policía abandonara la zona.

Hoy en día, no es lo mismo. La emoción que tenía por la persecución ha desaparecido. Ahora me emociono más por lo mucho que puedo forzar mi estilo. Mi estilo ha avanzado años luz desde aquella primera pieza y agradezco haber tenido mentores como East y Scribe para guiarme por el camino.

I did on a construction wall right on 2 busy intersections on a street. I remember how scary it was fo me, because I had no idea how to do it. I was the first one in my city to do this type of graffiti and really had no clue how to do it. I remember bringing roller paint and a brush (I didn’t even know that they used spray paint). The first time I did it I was chased by the police. I hid out in some bushes for about 30 minutes before the police left the area.

Nowadays, it isn’t the same. The excitement I had for the chase is gone. Now I get more excited on how much I can push my style. My style has come light years since that first piece and I’m grateful I had mentors like East and Scribe to guide me along the way.
