¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Como la mayoría de la gente, escribí unas cuantas palabras diferentes al empezar, pero acabé dejando la primera porque había un escritor mayor que ya la había escrito. Mis primeras palabras contenían las letras R, E y S, y cuando buscaba una palabra acabé eligiendo SOROE, ya que tenía esas letras pero también la doble O, lo que creaba un bonito equilibrio y la oportunidad de simetría en torno a la R.
Like most people, I wrote a few different words when starting out, but I ended up moving from my first one as there was an older writer who already wrote it. My first few words had the letters R, E and S in them, and when I was looking for a word I ended up picking SOROE as it had those letters but also the double O which created a nice balance and opportunity for symmetry around the R.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Aunque nací en Australia, mi familia es de Marsella (Francia). Cada uno o dos años iba de vacaciones a Francia, y hacia los 11 años empecé a fijarme en los graffitis: en Australia están relativamente limpios en los suburbios, pero en Marsella están absolutamente destrozados. Aquello me inspiró para empezar a pintar y, después de aquel viaje, ya no paré.
Although I was born in Australia, my family comes from Marseille, France. I would go to France every year or two for a holiday, and around 11 years old I started noticing graffiti properly – in Australia it is relatively clean in the suburbs, but in Marseille it is absolutely smashed. This really inspired me to start painting and after that trip I was into it, and never stopped from there.

What is your style?
Suelo pintar en un estilo de «graffiti» un tanto clásico, con las típicas flechas, adornos y demás. Suelo jugar con las conexiones y superposiciones en la mayoría de las obras, dejando las letras bastante sencillas en su núcleo, pero con barras superpuestas y cosas como que el remate de la R se convierta en la espina dorsal de la E, por ejemplo. Sin embargo, depende de lo que esté pintando, cuando hago trenes tiendo a tener un estilo más «redondeado» con menos bordes duros. Últimamente intento divertirme más con los rellenos y los fondos, siendo más abstracto que prolijo, y luego colocando un contorno nítido encima. También me gusta incluir un personaje en la mayoría de mis obras.
I tend to paint in a somewhat classic “graffiti” style, with the usual arrows and doo-dads and so on. I try to usually play with connections and overlaps in most pieces, leaving the letters fairly simple at their core but having bars overlapping and things like the kicker of the R becoming the spine of the E for example. It depends what I am painting though, when doing panels I tend to have a more “rounded” style with less hard edges. For me lately I try to have more fun with my fills and backgrounds, being more abstract than neat, and then slapping a crisp outline on top. I also love to throw in a character with most pieces.

Una idea genial. Acabo de volver de un viaje relámpago a Europa en el que he pintado con mucha gente de diferentes países, y me encanta la idea de que el graffiti puede conectar a gente de todo el mundo sin importar su edad, nacionalidad, etc. Como alguien que ha publicado una revista de graffiti basada en entrevistas, apoyo proyectos como el tuyo, creo que son muy útiles para inspirar a nuevos y futuros escritores de graffiti.
Cool idea. Having just come back from a quick trip to Europe where I painted with many people in different countries, I love the idea that graffiti can connect people worldwide no matter their age, nationality, etc. As someone who has published an interview based graffiti magazine, I support projects like yours, I think they are very helpful for inspiring new and upcoming graffiti writers.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera obra la hice en el patio trasero de mi casa sobre un trozo de cartón con Aussie Exports (botes de pintura baratos de una tienda de todo a cien), y no era nada especial, como puedes ver en la foto. Pero me enganchó a la pintura, y después de eso intenté pintar cada vez mejor. Creo que desde el principio, como admiraba a los escritores que pintaban muy limpio, siempre intentaba estar más y más limpio, y conseguir que mi obra pareciera «perfecta». Muchas veces, cuando era niño, tapaba mis propias obras porque no estaba contento con ellas, pero hoy en día, como la mayoría de mis obras son de estilo libre, me dejo llevar por la corriente y, aunque no cumplan mis expectativas, suelo ver al menos una o dos cosas buenas en ellas.
My first piece was done in my backyard on a piece of cardboard using Aussie Exports (cheap dollar store paint cans), and was nothing special – as you can see for yourself in the picture. But it got me hooked on painting, and after that I would try and paint better and better. I think since the beginning, because I looked up to writers that painted very clean, I would always try and get cleaner and cleaner, and get my piece to look “perfect”. Many times as a kid I would often cap my own pieces when I was done as I was unhappy with them – but nowadays, since I freestyle most pieces I just go with the flow and even if it doesn’t meet my expectations I can usually see at least 1-2 good things within the piece.
